Old chrome wire tubes on my olds rocket IMG_3744.JPG

  3. Thanks for all the replies, I’m running 7mm wire as that’s what the flamethrower terminals are designed for but aren’t happy the way it looks , just looking for ideas as awhile to go yet.
It’s going in a 30 Coupe with open engine so would like it to look tidy.
I going with cloth covered wire, early style 90degree plug ends and straights into the distributor.( the plan anyway, they change though)
I can’t just walk into a parts joint down here and pick from a selection of peices unless I go modern style regarding separaters, leads and terminals, even then most are fluro kits for common 8s
Even getting the cloth covered wire , 90s and brass wire ends was a struggle as not much stock with what we have going on. I couldn’t even get the straight boots for the distributor as no stock.
The pic is in the run stand so the manifolds won’t be used , going with headers.
Like I said thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Ford got it right with the earlier flatheads and the front drive distributors.

  6. Thanks but I saw this via another thread a few days ago but most distributor boots are around 3/4” ID on the large end whereas the Flamethrower plates suit a 5/8” ID boot.
Brillman don’t give these sizes, only the wire size that I could see anyway.
I will have to email them and ask.

I used pretty standard routing for my SBC, however I used some spring steel clips to hold the wire separators in place.
I can easily unsnap the wires to gain room to remove the distributor or the cap.
Under the ram-horn I used an available bolt hole to hold a home built stainless bracket to keep the wires in place. HPIM0204.JPG HPIM0206.JPG HPIM0209.JPG

Take some thinner and remove the lettering from the wires.
I worked at Taylor cable company for a spell during tech school, I couldn't wait to get out of that job.

Hey Chris , glad to see your Caddy project is moving forward:D I finally lit mine off the other day. Cant help much with wire routing as I used 1951 covers with the factory loops welded to the outside of the covers to route the wire's .

  13. The factory bracket on this Caddy does a good job, but it does detract from the rocker cover, especially if chromed, in my opinion.

  16. Thanks Colin, great to hear you got yours fired up. All good?
I got mine running a few months back and are stoked! Ran really good on the run stand, fired it with original distributor but wanting to sort properly with the Spalding.
    Cheers Chris

  18. I remember those things from my Y-block days; usually oil soaked and jammed up against the firewall. Fun times...

On my flathead I am running chrome tubes and Brillman cloth covered, carbon core wires with rajal terminals.

Black wires. If you can find the early covers that held the front 4 cylinders of your SBC against the block use them and paint them the color of the block. Tuck them all down off the distributor cap to behind the heads. The less you see the better for me.
Ford Y-Block holders can be used on a lot of engine to keep the wires spaced and hidden.
