  3. This had to be late in the season. First, their earlier 63's were sponsored by
Stanford Brothers (my 1st 63 came from there). Second, notice the Pentastar emblem on the lower front fender. they did not start putting those on 63's until late in the model year.

  12. The Stanford Bros. sponsorship was only for the 1963 Winter Nationals at Pomona. Al Eckstrand obtained the sponsorship without the knowledge of the rest of the group. The lettering was removed as soon as that race was over.

    Hello,

On the West Coast, during these hot factory stock car racing days, each of the big name factories had their own cadre of name racers. The Ford Comets were some of the fastest in racing during 1965. The lightweight race cars did well on the dragstrips and each team had their backers and fans.

But, the idea of the fast race cars was supposed to boost sales of the same style cars for the average Joe/Mary on their daily drivers. It just seemed like the race cars did not boost sales of those models.

Beginning in 1964, Hubert Platt’s Ford race cars became known as “Georgia Shakers.” Although Hubert’s earliest race cars were Chevrolets. (Chevys were often called “shakers”) Hubert switched to Ford when his Chevrolet factory support was discontinued.

Ford racing program officials wasted no time securing Hubert to campaign fords. Georgia had always been a stronghold of sales for Ford cars, pick up trucks and tractors. His first Ford race car, a 1964 Ford thunderbolt Fairlane became “The Georgia Shaker..”

At the time of his death, Hubert Platt was the surviving member of the pioneer drag racing Platt Brothers, from Atlanta. His brother, Houston was a well known east coast funny car racer.

$4550 in 1965 is equal to $37,500 today. The trailer would be $3,300.

    upload_2021-1-24_4-40-38.png DYNO DON
    Hello,
Being involved in So Cal drag racing over the years, names become synonymous with a certain brand of cars. We grew up having Chevrolet sedans in our teenage high school group. So, it was always a topic of discussion when a photo or story came out about Chevrolet and a So Cal local doing well.

"Don Nicholson got his drag racing career started because of Chevrolet. And that famous nickname? That is something he received while he was working at a Chevrolet dealership in So Cal. Nicholson supplemented his need for racing funds by working at the local Service Chevrolet. There, Nicholson earned his famous nickname, as Service Chevrolet was one of only a few service centers that had a chassis dyno. Nicholson quickly caught on to the process of dyno tuning customers’ cars, so much so, that he became known for his abilities."

    upload_2021-1-24_4-45-55.png
Working for Service Chevrolet, Nicholson had access to some of the best offerings Chevrolet could offer, including the high-performance Bubbletop Bel Air. In 1961, Nicholson was one of the first people to take order of one of the new 409ci V8-powered Bubbletops. He quickly turned his tuning knowledge and skills into a championship factory race car.
    upload_2021-1-24_4-46-45.png
Having an association of working at a dealership, helped get the 409 Chevrolet Bel Air. For all of us, the wait time on special order 409 "bubble top" Impala was anywhere from 6 months to almost a year. Privileges of the factory sponsorships…

During this time period before Nicholson moved to Georgia, rumor has it that the icon for the song was actually a Nicholson-tuned 409 Chevy, not a Dodge.

Then the song became a popular a couple of years later.

The Little Old Lady From Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
You can catch her all the time, just gettin' her kicks now
(Go granny, go granny, go granny, go)
With her four speed stick and a four-o-nine, now
(Go granny, go granny, go granny, go)
The guys come to race her from miles around
But she'll give 'em a length, then she'll shut 'em down
And everybody's sayin' that there's nobody meaner than
The little old lady from Pasadena
