It's getting real tough to find any MP or Jr. Stockers that I haven't posted already. But I'm still on the look out for them.
Most of these pictures take me back to when I was a kid growing up in Milwaukee , {I was 10 in 1965} It seemed like there was always some kind of race car or cruiser sitting next to a neighborhood repair shop or service station. Some of my uncles and older cousins where into drag racing at Great Lakes or stock cars. Back when a guy could build something on the side and go out on the weekend and have fun without breaking the bank. I often wonder how many of these cars posted survived in some form or fashion or how many like the ones that I knew of { some of mine included} that got broke, parted out and thrown away. Or did that restored Corvette or 55 Nomad that you saw at the last car show used to pull the front wheels and burn down the quarter mile back in the 60's. My car building and racing started in the early 70's. But those memories of the 60's inspired everything I did from then on till this very day and still counting. same here it seems like every garage in town had a race car. One of my all time favorites is the 55 Nomad The Carpetbagger that ran at Dover first then Lebanon Valley NY. I first saw it in probably 1966 at Lebanon Valley (but have since found photos of it earlier) And IT IS STILL TO THIS DAY A RACE CAR AND STILL RACING.
Anyone remember Lynn underwood from Ks with a 59 corvette in E anF modified Production? the car was chevy frost beige. Car was beautiful with polished Monoquoke (sp)wheels. 267 inch small block Nash five speed and 6.50 gear in a Dana. Went to indy in maybe late 70's. He also ran a Danny Davis built 80 malibu in M/p. Just wondering it was frost beige also. Lippy

I have some questions for you guys. I am eventually lettering up my Biscayne and want to be as accurate as possible. When you see these cars that have the HP lettered on them, was this relevant at all to classifying? Or was it always based on lb/ci? How did they figure hp at that time? I can't imagine dynos were as accessible back then as they are now. Was it mostly a rough estimate based on ET, weight, etc?
Shorty I believe the HP lettering you speak of was a "factory rated" number for their particular engine. Like 409 cu.in. 425hp or Ford 406 cu in. 410hp. We all know that the race engine probably had more hp than the factory rating. It was just for hype. Pat
Shorty: Class was determined by weight to cubic inches only. HP was not a factor. HP most likely estimated if it was stated. Gasoline with carburetors, 2-4bbl or 3-2bbl. max. Stock body, all bumpers, hood scoops allowed. Any cam, compression ratio or head/manifold combinations. No wheel well modifications, 7" tire requirement until I think 1969 but still had to fit in stock body work.
Thanks for your reply! Makes sense that those numbers would be mostly just for bragging. Really shows how far we've come that back then 300-something horsepower was worth boasting about enough to paint it on your fenders! Another question for ya: what kind of ETs were average cars running in the lower-tier classes?
Shorty: Try and add the 1967 national record list (thanks T. Kasch) Keep in mind average times and speeds were probably 2 to 5 tenths less. I know C/MP was 11 lbs/ci.
Thanks a ton, man! Thats some really great info right there. My car would've just made it into C/MP, but I definitely wouldn't have even come close to those numbers! I haven't had an opportunity to make a pass since I've put the new engine and 4spd in, but I'm wishfully guessing maybe mid-high 13s, if the track was slightly downhill and there was a good tail wind.
