Remember the days when they called the 37 Fords the "ugly duckling" of the bunch.
Not sure I necessarily agreed but if this was mine I might stop looking at every 32 Ford I see.

WHAT WAS THE MOST ONE YEAR CHANGE FROM COOL TO UGLY?
    For Ford 1932-1933
I know my HAMB license will be revoked but there was something special about the 1932 Ford. It was the right car at the right time. We needed at least another year of the Duece. The Deuce and the Thres, that would have been nice.
33s and 34s were great cars but man when it comes to the 32...I wish we had more cowbell.

Apparently I like ugly cars......... One post I really see is 61-62 Chrysler..... Both are gorgeous in different ways like comparing two girls, I can appreciate a slim athletic Brunette and a redhead with some curves. Of course blondes aren't all bad either.

  8. Staggered valve cover bolts versus straight across. Intake manifolds with different angle of hold down bolts. Some heads had mounting holes, some didn't. There are more nuances than most want to discuss.

Yes I am. Didn't used to be but the variance of brands leads to an eventual eye opener. I have had chevies, Olds, Pontiac, Cad, Ford, Lincoln, Merc. Lincoln VS Cad is no comparison with quality of ride and build. Lincoln has better ride and no squeaks and I am speaking used cars both. Olds and Pontiac, better build quality than any chev but still couldn't touch the Mercs and Fords. Through the years when I settled and grew older I gained experience both family getters and racing. All in all I was attracted not by price but the quality of build when I bought my first new vehicle which was in 1981 and have had used also since but now all new and all Ford. Last new I bought I searched and could not get what I wanted in either a chev or dodge but Ford had exactly what I was looking for and still does while the other two do not. That was in 2017 and I am looking again this year and also broadened out even to toytoter and guess what, that don't even come close.

How many different V8 bellhousing bolt patterns has Ford used in the past 65 years? How many has Chevy used?

But that has nothing to do with how butt ugly so many cars got in 1958, does it

  10. If I pick years - maybe from when I was born - Chevy nailed it pretty much from 1955 on for the next 9 yrs or so. Ford - the 55/56 were good and built on the previous years - but the 57/59 not so much - I'd go with the 60 to the 1964 Ford offerings. Mopar about the same 55/56 although the big Chrysler 300's still looked great and ran as well - would hold off on the smaller Mopar ones until the 1963/65 years.....Stude's about the same 55/anything but the 56 GH and then the later 63/64 Larks.....

How about cool to ugly (or ugly to cool) in the SAME year. I'll let you guys decide which way it went:mad::D xxx.jpg vvvv.jpg

Well I forgot about the staggered valve cover bolt pattern! By the way if anyone is throwing away any of the annoying aluminum ones with fins on them I’ll take them all.
As for bolt hole heads those must be that new “late model” stuff. Mine are the old ones with little bumps.
Ultimately Everyone has their preference for sure.

I’m definitely in the 1958 camp for style changes. GM being the ones I’m more familiar with. 58 Chevy does okay maybe thanks to American Graffiti but Olds and Buick definitely went big bulky crazy. Even the corvette was attacked by the big bulky chrome Gods!
But it is interesting to see cars that were previously passed up on have now become super expensive as well.

You know, I think a lot of these cars really are not bad, they just had the misfortune of following what would become...
    Legends.
It's like Buddy Holley or Elvis being the warm up band for Bobby Helms.
I'm big fan of Helms but he's not Holley or Presley.

My Dad really liked the look of the '59 Ford, when the 1960's came out they were just butt ugly, think the trunk and tail lights killed the thing. It left a lasting memory, I was nine years old. The 1961's made up for it and I clearly remember looking at the sales brochures on the dining room table with my Dad. He even asked what I thought was a good color choice. Black with a red interior, fordor hardtop. I'd learn to drive on that car, took my drivers test, and got hit head on by a guy running a light in a Corvair. Got to hang out at the body shop while a new nose replaced the crushed one. That was the start of my lifetime of body& paint work.

  19. I love the 32,and have one,but its really Fords attempt at one more year of model A"s. Kind of like Chevy making the 57 when they knew they wanted change, but werent ready with the 58 fast enough.

  20. Agree with the /57-58 transition. Universally failed.

Being a life-long Willys fanatic I always wondered at the 34-'35 transition. I think that was a large step backward in styling. That being said, my gasser/daily driver is a '36. Factory made 10x more 35/35 cars than the more attractive 33/34s.

Many people of course would say 57 to 58 chevys. I know there is a lot more appreciation for the 58 than there used to be.

  22. I disagree with the ‘58 model year being bad across the board. The first car is not mine, but I wish it was.

...... and I really don’t think this is ugly either.

    Nothing wrong with '58's. I'd take a '58 Ford over a '57 or '59 any day or a '58 Chevy over a '57.

  24. ^^^^^ I have to agree that the '58 chev has more eye appeal than a '57 or any other tri five GM's for that matter.

  25. I’ll live on the edge-36 to 37 ford car. Not crazy about the switch to in fender headlights. The backend remains among the best looking in my eyes till the 40’s.

When I was a teen and still riding bicycles I would wheel over to the Chevrolet dealer to see the beautiful 1955 Chevs. then the same in 1956. It was a big deal then for the unveiling of the new models at the dealerships, you could not see them till the unveiling day. 1957 unveil was very eventful for me as the 1957 Chev. was the ugliest car I had ever seen.. But I got over the disappointment and have owned 2 since then. Would not mind having another too. Never owned a 55 or 56, funny huh.
