I am going to install an 8BA engine in my '40 pick up chassis. It has the center pick-up type oil pan. I haven't tried to set the engine in the chassis yet, but have read that there will be interference with the drag link and/or tie rod. Have 4" dropped axle, Posies reverse eye front spring and stock front cross-member. My question is: has anyone modified there oil pan rather than try to find the rear sump truck pan or the elusive '49-"51 merc. pan. Would appreciate a picture if possible. Thank you.
8BA pan will not work. 49_50 Mercury pan is the best fit. Second best is the 48 - 52 truck pan, the truck pan sometimes interferes with the drag link and will need a little massage. , . . ?
'39 p/u with an 8ba and a truck pan. When I got it it had a passenger car pan on it. There were some clearance issues so I went with the truck pan. No issues now.
I modified the 8ba pan in a 40 that we did a dropped axle install on last year. I moved the front face back about 1 3/4" as I recall to clear the drag link and tie rod.
This pan came off of an 8BA that was in Pinstriper40's '40 Sedan. I bought the engine for parts, don't know if he modified it or had it done!
Thank you Rick. I may have to look for a different pan if you have to take that much capacity away. At this point I guess I will set the engine in the frame and see how much interference there is.
