I was thinking about putting some on my 48 Ford coupe. Anybody got any pics of a 46-48 Ford coupe running Moons?

 

Kind of proud of this one. Drove my way to a nice "Red Hat"

 

They do change the look of a car.

 

Purple People Eater

Ever since I saw the original thread of the 1957 Purple People Eater dragster, that early flamed version stuck in my mind. It was brash for those days and made it stand out among the early dragsters and other race cars. That is early hot rodding and drag racing.

There were very few race cars that had a full body, let alone other forms of streamlining. It was a great example of early hot rod influence on a drag race car. The flames made it faster, while the Moon Discs added to the flair.

At any angle the early streamlined Purple People Eater had style. The flames and Moon Discs just added to the complete early FED race car.

Out West during the same time period, Daddy’s Auto Body Shop in So Cal had several versions of their famous FED. The flames were quite fancy and the Moon Discs made it look super fast and streamlined. It was a weekly record holder and winner in many So Cal dragstrips. (Even the Ranchero looked fast.)

Early Tommy Ivo Buick Dragster with carburetors and… of course, Moon Discs. In the background is the Daddy’s Auto Body FED with the colorful flames and Moon Discs. Different variations for the different days at one of the many local So Cal dragstrips back then.

I like 'em. They are cheap and clean.seeing all of these pictures made me wonder...How common were they on Kustoms?

Judging by what is in the exact center of the picture, I don't think you were taking a photo of the moon discs...

The first ones were held on with screws I think race associations required them. I have lost full hubcaps @ 60 and found them a quarter of a mile away.

 

I know the model year is OT, but this is the actual ramp truck owned by Mooneyes today and was originally purchased by Dean Moon. This picture was taken at Mooneyes. This truck has always had Moon Discs.

 

BUT THEY ARE UGLY !!!!

 

You are still required to screw them on @ Bonneville.
Most hot rodders never ever see a track or a dry lake and never will. That is why Moon and the various other manufacturers made snap on caps. The ones on the pusher were original moons and stayed on for about 80K sometimes and speeds near to 130. I have lost hub caps too, and seen lots of the repop discs not stay on well at all.

 

Mooneyes has ALWAYS manufactured/sold screw-on Moon Discs. And I think they look BITCHIN'!!

 

The '46 Tudor we bought for my wife came from Ca with "Moon" discs.

 

I ran them on my coupe from 1995-1999. After that I popped on some JC Whitney chrome baby moons until 2011, then went with American TTO's.

 

That car blew my mind when it was in Hot Rod. The all time favorite.

The Glass Slipper
Hello,

Our first introduction to the glass slipper was in a hot rod magazine. It was a very cool attempt at streamlining a drag race car. But, the success at the drags allowed them to try for other records, with different changes. The story of the changes, the results and plenty of storylines in several magazines all made for wonderful reading.

My brother had constructed a little foam model that looked like one of our mom’s high heeled shoes. The color and design was nice and the finished product was a rougn homemade model. We even used small wax rods for the custom headers and in the days that got rather hot, they melted. Instead of being parallel, the were weed burners. Wires and needles were then applied to keep them straight.

We were impressed with the quality of the original build of the glass slipper. It was way before its time and holds the distinction of one of the earliest streamlined bodies for drag racing use. Then, of course, they also set the world speed record for their class, with their streamlined body.

Later on in our photo-journal days, we saw the Cortopassi Brothers “Glass Slipper” in a car show during one of our S.F. area road trips. It was immaculate and up close, outstanding.

Did the Moon Discs help in the quarter mile runs? Possibly, for the minimal times on the dragstrip, probably not. At the speed runs for the world record, the streamlined body certainly helped in the long run…pun intended. Those Moon Discs were also helpful in the record setting runs. Usually, the Moon Discs make a car look fast. This time, the Moon Discs were fast and did its intended job.
