Been a long time since I was on the H.A.M.B. but wanted to add to this thread as I stumbled on it today. This 35 was built by a couple guys in MN (Nutz & Gefre) in the 60’s. My uncle owned it for a time as well. I was told the belly burners were made from 57 Ford driveshafts.

I located the truck a few years ago - still intact!

Well, I wasn’t there in the day, but my Dad bought the ‘57 Chevy PU new. He told me he was glad he never -turn away now, not politically correct- didn’t put Portegy stacks on it. Now this would have been run the exhaust pipes up through the steps. Ala poor mans deisel.
So before you slam me for the bad PC thing, put this in to perspective please. My dad grew up in a 100% Sicilian family with grape vineyards, Portuguese fellows in the area had dairy farms. They had deisel trucks with stacks coming up behind the cab

    Hence the reference.

But, I have to say I do understand why it’s referred to as a belly burner, but might just be me I think it looks ugly as all get out. I know this was done “way back when”. But looks like the early start of rat rod to me.

I read some replies about “exhaust limits” or similar, like maybe too low to run full exhaust

well, why not just dump them out the side then?

We just called them "Bed Pipes" never heard the term, belly burners.
1 3/4" or 2" pipe?, you need to build some mock up pipes and see which size works with the size of the bed, bed length, etc. It's the old; stand back and look at it from all angles thing. 2" will probably look fine with the '36 bed. If you can find a place to do custom mandrel bending in your area that's the best way to go. I took my mock ups to H&L Metals in Long Beach, Ca. and had them make me two sets in 2" stainless. It was a little cheaper to have two sets done at once. I have the second set in the rafters waiting to be used on my '33 pu.
My '29 had a 327 with a small solid lifter cam through Smithy mufflers, I loved the way that truck sounded. Also watching the vapor puffing out of the pipes on a cold morning was cool.
Oh yeah, and the comments about them cooling off pretty fast are accurate. First of all they are out there in the wind when they are getting the most heat and when you're idling around they don't get as hot as when under power. Kids do have a natural tendency to want to touch 'em but I just stood by for a few minutes at shows to tell folks to stay away.

I like the kickstand pipes as well. They might be easier to use, if you wanted them functional.

I assume the term "belly burners" because if you leaned over the bed side you'd burn your belly on a hot pipe.

  14. My GMC is getting them. I have had the stainless tubing stashed away for years. Only difference is for now I am keeping the flatbed. The pipes will run just under the side rail since visually there is so much area to fill there. Of course some 10" reversed 56 Chevy wheels will help as well.

  25. Found this while strolling the interweb...while not belly burners, I don't think they'd do your shins any good if you rubbed against them. Neat idea.

Funny this should come up. I was calculating the smallest pipe I could get away with on a 301.
