Vintage mechanical fuel injection pictures

Early Enderle barn door.

 

A set-up I'm gathering part's to put on the street... Need a pump now, an All the bypass/line's, shut off...

 

this is an early Enderle Barn Door that has not been milled down shorter. Not seen in the picture is the "J" on the other side which i was told was for Jackson as in Pete Jackson. I guess he helped Kent Enderle in the original design. It also has the scoop with the 15 fins on the top instead of the usual smooth top.

 

I recall reading that both Pete and Kent worked on rockets and jet engines at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and had a solid grasp on nozzles and flow making them naturals to collaborate on fuel injection. They left JPL and started Enderle Injection and later Jackson left to follow other pursuits including his own injection firm.

 

I’m guess back in 2017 as I have a 2018 push truck now.. That me in the red suit walking up to get in.
The red 186 Firebird in the background has the Arias 12 Port GMC..mines currently a stock head GMC. J D

Marty, what year are your Hilborns? Mine are 67 and are the same size. They worked great on the dirt on methanol in the 70s. I'm also setting mine up w/7A gas nozzles, in a fuelish attempt to run them on the street someday...

 

Mine was purchased in '65, and has only been run on gas.

This is probably the most common Hilborn unit, model C265. It came off a 1960’s sprint car :

 

im confused here. efi is considered off topic yet there have been several pics of 350 chevies and big block chevies shown. these would be past the 65 hamb cut off. as far as traditional chrysler did offer efi on its 392 as a factory option. gm also had fi for most of its brands. i dont know if it was electronic. several of the mechanical units shown are anything but vintage. a example would be the barn door injector. all of these units are cool to see. lets not get so picky as to ruin the fun. its a very slippery slope when the word traditional gets thrown around. if we held to strict standards half of everything on the hamb could get deleted for one reason or another.

 

1959-60 Lions Dragstrip

During the 1959-60 era, Hilborn Injectors were the next best thing to multiple carburetors. Some people were using multiple carbs, as it was affordable. The SBC 283 we started with had 6 Strombergs. That is because, the Hilborn Port Injection System was not a daily driver, street legal system at the time of our build. But, it was on our wish list.

When we went to the larger 292 c.i. SBC blower spec motor, we were told if we did not run the two port Hilborn System, the 6 Strombergs on top of the 671 supercharger would give the necessary gas to go fast.

Within several months, we had ordered a two port Hilborn Injection System for our 671 supercharged SBC motor. It was waiting for us to go pick it up in August 1960.

The top racers at Lion’s Dragstrip started with Hilborn Port Injection Systems. But, it was for drag racing only and not for the street. It was not until almost 10 years later that someone knew how to adjust the port injection systems to run smoothly on the street.

I wonder if this injection was originally made with the staggered stacks or modified to be like a Crower unit? Once again, is it long stack for short port, or am I backwards?!

Mechanical fuel injection was very popular in SBC motors from the early days of drag racing. We saw plenty of them on all sorts of hot rods, drag race vehicles, but none on the street. (that wouldn’t be until many years later, when someone discovered what it took to make it work.)

The Hilborn Port Injection system was our first choice for the first time build of the 283 SBC motor for our 1940 Willys Coupe. Every Hilborn Port Injected SBC motor we saw was powerful and ran quite well. It would have complimented our 283 motor in the Willys Coupe quite well, except the units were not for street driving, only competition. No one at the time had the port injection system adjusted or modified to use for everyday street stop and go driving.

At Lion’s Dragstrip, as well as other So Cal dragstrips, the Dragmaster chassis was becoming very popular as it could be purchased as a kit. The kit could be a full rolling chassis set up for whatever motor, any stage of build, or just the frames. It depended on how soon you wanted to go drag racing with your motor.

Some chose to stay in the smaller motor classes with the same Dragmaster Chassis and components.

But, in December of 1959, we caught the different version of the Dragmaster Hilborn Port Injected SBC race car at the big East VS West Drag Meet at Riverside Raceway.

This was on the Ewen and Ramey '34 drag sedan that ran at both Bonneville and the drags. Sadly it crashed into a phone pole at Fontana when the throttle stuck. I saw it happen, driver ok but sedan destroyed

 

Mine, 1962. It was Hilborn #0025, and when I took it to Hilborn to get it flowed and a new barrel valve, Stu Hilborn came out from the back shop to see what old geezer had brought it in. Instead there was me, a dumb 19-year old kid who didn't know much about setting it up. So Stu took me back into the shop and showed me how to get it to work. I've never forgotten that.

 

Here is my Hilborn stack injector on my afx dodge it’s a big block Chevy unit I cut up with a battery powered skill saw then made adapters to bolt it to the heads yes there are mopar stack injectors but they are very expensive and do not stick straight up like this one does. this setup works very well it’s run on methanol and once it has been started for the day it will start easy each time the rest of the day
