    Hello,

JIMMY C KUSTOMS has been around for quite some time. He is a well known, pinstriper, designer and So Cal artist. His designs are unusual and he has been featured in many hot rod shows and presentations. He does have a little “Roth” influence and his designs/art work shows.

Who ever thought of pinstriping a form fitting, leather outfit? Only a skilled pinstripe artist would attempt such an art work.

The artwork is by Jay Adams, the tile work by Michael King.

    Hello,

Artists have always an upper hand in what they see and create. It is a wonder when it looks real life, as in a photo. Several So Cal cities have allowed local artists to contribute to various art projects in their towns. In the coastal town of San Clemente, there is the main drag going from the freeway + Coast Highway towards the ocean and pier. It is Avenida Del Mar. In the early years, it was a two lane road to the ocean going through parallel parked cars and small local artisans’ shops. No big name stores or chain brands, just local merchants.

Throughout the years, the downtown street has seen changes and to increase the shopping accessibility, the parallel parking turned into diagonal spaces. Plus, they added several large parking lots behind the downtown street. Now, the street itself was nice and the flow was perfect heading towards the beach. Every year, the activities centered around this main street. So, the city council had local artists show some ideas to be included into the pedestrian street friendly walkway.

So, a leisurely stroll is called for while shopping or just visiting. If the walk is difficult, the city has placed various benches and shaded areas for sitting down and relaxing. Once rejuvenated, then you might spend more money in the local shops. These bench areas have the artwork of Jay Adams and the coordinating tile work by Michael King.

The art work is of the historic Miramar Theater or as known by some really old timers, the Hildalgo Theater or the San Clemente Theater. In our teenage times, it was the Miramar Theater in North San Clemente. It was home to several rousing, surf movies and intense bottle cap flipping. The historic theater, now being revitalized was heavy with local folklore, throughout the times.

    Hello,

With all of the after holidays stuff for everyone, wetsuits, trunks, surfboards, etc. Why not try out the items with a nice brisk walk down to the some of the best winter surf at Upper Trestles. After you walk under the Amtrak rails in the wooden tunnel, the waves will give you plenty of satisfaction of improving your skills. The bigger waves are for the more experienced, while the middle bay area waves can be ridden by most anyone.

After the hard day of surfing and hiking up that long walk back to the parked cars, go see the famous mural of a cool woody and the view of the Trestles Surf Break on a great day.

It was countless stops at the small family run market on El Camino Real from 1960 to the present day. It was a life saver when supplies were down and an all day trek in the jungle was called for during our forays against the Marines. Once packed in with supplies, we could have stayed in that thick jungle for days. Then when all things died down, a short jaunt to the pristine empty waves. It was due to and also, thanks to the scare/capture tactics of the Marines against all who were on the beach and water.

The mural was in the later days, not from 1960. The city has currently updated its community mural program and this one was approved for display, being so close to the pristine waves and long standing part of the surfing community.

After plenty of surf sessions, a nice cup of coffee, tea, and tons of snacks or sandwiches just hit the spot prior to the long drive home to Long Beach as teenagers. In later days, the drive to South Orange County was not as long, but the stop over or pit stop was still part of the after-surfing session regime. The owners did accept all kinds of surfers’ attire, even dripping wetsuits and wet hair styles. It was part of the local lore…

    Hello,

When these art works came out in the So Cal scene, it was an eye opener. One had to have some imagination to include hot rods, surfing and skateboarding as in a similar culture. everyone was impressed with the talent behind the art.

Rick Rietveld is a Southern California native and has unlimited talent in the art field. For us, his talent and within his art work, the best ones are the hot rod beach scenes and customs.

This artwork did well during the holiday season.

During the So Cal history, cultural hotspots were included into the artwork. The craze that started in the 1960-62 timeline of multiple surfboards being stacked on cars and station wagons was the hit of the So Cal coastline. They were not safe for normal driving, but for show. It depicted the crazy stunts that surfers did for notoriety.

The one piece of art hits home since it was incorporated as a background for this cool Aloha Girl/woody art. The local historic, Sam’s Seafood Restaurant, with the distinct architectural design, then over the years, converted to a Don the Beachcomber’s Restaurant in Sunset Beach, CA, looks as if it was the inspiration for the “TIKI GIRL” in all of its glory and detailing.

Finally, the most interesting artwork and the ones that held our interest the longest were the two below, the Road Queen and Surfite. It was like a “Where’s Waldo” painting with tons of little places as well as things to see and check out. Locals from So Cal would get the implications and locales.

    Hello,

As more big name shopping areas pop up and draw shoppers away from the quaint downtown areas, the better it is for a casual stroll and see the old shops with their wares. Owning a small business is difficult, but some of the mainstays on the two block long main drag help keep the customers coming back, time after time.

During the late fall and winter season, the historic Hotel San Clemente has an outdoor courtyard that has put on fine dining and music events. During the recent pandemic ruling, the outdoor area was thinned out and followed the rules for masks and dining socially distanced from others.
    upload_2021-1-9_4-17-7.png
The city of San Clemente has built, with the donations of local citizens, outdoor rest stops all along the historic shopping district. It is the main downtown area and this art work adds to the ambiance to the quaint city structure. San Clemente’s history called the “Landmarks On Del Mar” artwork was done by Jay Fisher and the tile work by Michael King.

In 2008, the historic Hotel San Clemente art was added to the downtown street.

Historic buildings, valuable rest spots and great food for outdoor dining, any time of the year or pandemic. This street through the main downtown area as well as the other artwork in town, gives the visitor and locals a city to enjoy. (And the shops aren’t too bad, either.) These public outlets for rest and relaxation are permanent and not affected by the closing of the outdoor dining all along the avenue. A 6 foot plus distance could be used at the far ends of the benches and rest stops.
