I was curious if anyone had photos handy of some early examples of customs with their running boards removed? I'm specifically looking for 35/36 Fords, especially 3 windows.

I attached a photo of the 36 apparently owned at one time by Lynn Yakel. A great looking early custom in my opinion.

Rik’s article nails it. The first 38 Packard Darrin had running boards. The second didn’t. Only a handful of the Hollywood Darrins retained running boards.
On my Packard I rolled the sills to really accentuate the flowing transition.

41’s didn’t have running boards. 40 was the last year for Ford and Chevrolet. My sons 40 Chevrolet is not going to have them after the repaint. He’s going to do some work on the front of the rear fenders. Front s have been done.. 57B23A7A-D27A-4C0E-9D16-98D3AD2E79E2.jpeg

Scan0440.jpg The panel below the rockers, some people consider this a running board on 41`s. A highly modified 41.

  9. I really like the old coach built look . Makes them a bit more streamlined

  10. Some of them get a piece of sheetmetal, mini roll pan on the sides to smooth out the frame. It makes the car look lighter or having less heavy parts.
prob one of the coolest, but this one is also channeled to hide the frame!

My dad was a teenager in Sacramento and he saw first hand some of the customs that Westergard and the Barris brothers were building in the 1940s. When my dad built his 36 Ford custom in the late 1950s he left the running boards off like what he saw on some of the Westergard and Barris cars.

I don't have pictures of it but, my first real car was a Forty Ford Coupe that had been channeled over the frame, dechromed and painted Turqouise. It had no running boards. The spring eyes and been reversed and it sat low and drove like a sports car because it had a built Flathead with Fenton cast iron headers, Offenhauser heads, a Mallory dual-point distributor, and '39 transmission. On top of that it had a pair of Jeep seats. For a teenager in North East Mississippi in the Late Fifties it was like being both an Indy Car Driver, a Movie star, and an untouchable Juvenile Delinquent all rolled into one. But, just like Cinderella's Coach, it eventually turned back into a pumpkin.
