Like this one in my 39 Plymouth pickup. 31 bucks on eBay, vintage unknown but cleaned up decent and I dig it.Dont think I’ll restore it, like it as is!

My wheel in the '53 Bel Air convertible is an early Buick Riviera Sport Wheel. I did not have the horn mechanism so I cut down a 67 Bel Air center medallion. The ground for the horn is supplied by spring and micro switch that is activated by pushing on the medallion.

Heres the wheel in my 54. I was going to use a 62 wheel then decided it needed to look older. I saw a 49 accessory wheel and really liked it but they were too expensive for me so I decided to make my own. I started with a 52 wheel because I liked the size. Adapted a Vette steering hub to it, the horn button is a piece of speaker grill. I made all the other shiny stuff out of stainless. The center of the wheel is bondo and fiberglass.

T-Bucket build by Fred Castro SD Prowlers

    upload_2020-12-28_4-14-15.png

    Hello,

Here is a very nicely done T Bucket with vertical steering from San Diego. It had an unusual tilt away steering for fast exits. The gauges were on the passenger side for clear viewing and to make room for the flip steering wheel. It was a show quality T-Bucket that saw a ton of miles going to and from all of the roadster events and picnics in So Cal.

When I was given a ride in the T-Bucket, it was my first and last. I am 6 feet and it was a tight fit in the seat. It was thrilling, as the wind was blasting us all over and the road seemed to be right at my fingertips. The roadster seemed like a dragster going down the road with nothing to protect anyone from outside influences. The quick response of the powerful motor and the lightweight body/chassis made the roadster move instantly.

    Jnaki

Being as slim as I was, the fit in the driver's seating position was tight to say the least. The upright steering was a little odd, but comfortable.

This was/is called a “fat man’s wheel” for obvious reasons. It would have been perfect for the big old jolly guy in the red suit to quickly get in or out of the roadster at every house and chimney during the Christmas Holidays.

    Hello,
Here is the latest from San Diego:
Fred’s steering wheel was referred to as a “fat man’s” wheel. It folded up toward the windshield. Dan Biggs now owns Fred’s roadster and he told me 6 months ago that the old wheel wasn’t safe anymore and he has had to replace it.
From Jim Reid, San Diego Prowlers

    Thanks Jim...

I like the plain old three or four hole Grant wheel. I like the 13" with a Lee 14:1 steering box.. I could of sworn they made a black wheel with silver glitter...

Changed several steering wheels to improve the look, but also to improve the feel. I recently rebuilt a '52 Pontiac wheel that came with my '39 Chev project, and I loved the look. But it didn't take long for me to not be happy with the 18.5" wheel! Even minor adjustments as I drove down the road took big turns of the wheel. I did like the ease in turning since I have no power assist, but hated the huge movements.
I changed to a 16" wheel I don't think looks as nice, but sure is nicer to drive with.

  28. I would really like a Crestliner steering wheel on the 47 but this will have to do ‘till I receive my $2000 stimulus check.
