This is just the question on my mind lately. I've got a '63 401 that will get as close to stock (internally) rebuild as possible. I know the 400+ torque rating could cause a transmission problem, if the driver gets a little over zealous. So, I was planning to use a Saginaw 4 speed I have, as I know it's in good working condition. Now, I'm questioning the durability of that combo. probably no racing, but I may lay a little rubber on occasion. I'm not married to the Saginaw, but just can't spring the $2500 for rebuilt Muncie, BW, or a Ford top loader. I'm thinking a Dearborn (Ford) 3 speed from a GM might be the ticket. Or, a Ford 3.03 3 speed? Is there any reason to not use a short tail shaft trans in a car?

If you are concerned about durability then there is always a Mopar A-833...;)

I question the belief that a T-10 or Muncie won't hold up behind a 364 or for that matter a mild 401 or 425,Gm didn't have any reservation about putting them behind those motors in the mid 60's in cars that weighed 3500-4000 lbs. They even offered a warranty on them.

As far as I know, the Holy Grail of traditional hot rod transmissions is the 1937 LaSalle. If this is one of the LaSalle transmissions that you are saying is cheap, please send me a PM.

And there is an overdrive version of the 833 that can be found in early 1980's GM, yes GM, pickups. Not as strong as the Mopar version of the A-833, but nonetheless a three speed with overdrive "4th" gear and probably stronger that a T-5.

1-2-3-4 on the shift knob is traditional. I'm not convinced that 1-2-3-4-5 is.
