  1. I had the pleasure of trailering Mr. Harris at the '65 Winternationals. Oh, and taking the class records back.

"Mason" might be Mason Dixon Dragway. Judging from the hills in the back, it may be.

  10. I believe the "Mason" Rex was referring to was Lyle Mason who was Jack's partner at the time the above photo was taken. I don't remember Jack ever traveling east farther than Denver with the roadster so I'm pretty certain this was taken at one of the early SLC tracks.

One of the best examples of pushing the rules to the limit in a Street Legal Roadster Class was Jim Cassidy/Junior Thompson Hemi powered street roadster.

    Hello,

If the rules allowed some modifications within the realm of street legal and be driven on the street. It would be nice to be able in 1958-59 to drive this Hemi powered street roadster down Atlantic Blvd in Bixby Knolls into the drive-in restaurant parking lot on any given Friday/Saturday night. The over grown slicks may have been a problem on a misty night. But, rules were rules back then.

These days, the wide slicks would give the CHP an easy eye for a hazardous ticket due to the width beyond the fender.
“Was it a roadster that you could drive on the street? The class rules allowed certain modifications and required street legal equipment. I doubt if it was used for a night’s street cruising, but that would have been a lot of fun. This class at the drags was similar to the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. Modify your street car and bring it to the drags turned into modify your street car and tow it to the drags because it is an all-out drag racer built for the “street class.”

The Thompson Brothers (Junior & Eddie ) drove many different hot rod/drag race cars in their vast history. One of the most successful builds was the Hemi Powered street roadster of Jim Cassidy, driven by Junior Thompson. This street roadster was one of the most popular race cars at Lions Dragstrip during the 1958-59 season. The power train was strong and sometimes it took as much concentration driving and handling the light weight street roadster down the dragstrip.

In this case, wide slicks bursting out of the street legal rear fender did not make a difference. It was a rare sight at Lions or any of the So Cal dragstrips, but it did happen.

Any certified information on the blue street roadster is appreciated. Who owned the street roadster, what motor/trans and who drove it, all valuable information. Season: 1959-60 Lion's Dragstrip. Thanks... (reward for your efforts)
