I like both. My hubby's 30 pickup is chopped and my 30coupe is unchopped. However I would like to chop my car, but the room is soooo nice!!

Its a Mercury coupe, not a ford. They look very different.

The Merc J.B. posted is a perfect example of a car that needs to be chopped to look right, granted your building a custom.
In stock configuration that Merc looks funky; the top does nothing for the sexy lines of the rest of the car and the shape of the roof looks out of place. The chop on that Merc highlights the shape of the car as a whole and the Merc looks done without further modification.

Too many guys’ chop tops just to have a chopped car, I got caught up in the “chop everything” craze and my original plan was to chop my chevy, but before I could cut it I shaved it and added bags. The more I looked at it the less I wanted to “change”.
In my opinion it doesn’t need it.
I dig a well proportioned chop and menacing look of small windows but it’s not for every car and it’s defiantly not required to have a good looking custom

Chopped is cool on pre-40 cars. After that I'm not so sure...

I love this car!! Man, seen this in a few posts now.... Clean, simple, no chop, no channel, no gizmos, no gadgets. Good stance, very well done. Cute girl too.

This is where it's at for me. Love it.

I watched American Grafitti a dozen times, dreaming of the day I'd have a car that I needed to hunker down in to see out of properly. :D

I built this old English rod, took 3 inches out of the roof, and it definitly looked better for it, and I got that hunkered down buzz!

However, my new plastic fantastic project will be living with the roof as it is. I believe it is an inch or two lower than stock as it stands, but I spent so much time struggling in and out of the car above, both building it and driving it, that I decided 'headroom' was more important than 'hunker'.

My first anwer is chop everything.... But they're are some rides that I think would look
better not chopped. 40 Ford coupes and this Club coupe pictured below. Clint Ring
did an number on his coupe. The shoe box is perfect just like it is. Chop is important
but I think stance is more important.

    Happy Trails,

Almost anything can be chopped, but making it look good is the tricky thing right? I've never been one for chopped pickups of any year, but T, A and 32's almost always look better with a 'little bit off the top'.

I find that I like unchopped Chevy cars from '40+ more, but most Fords of the same year I like wacked...

Damn this 'personal prefference' BS, makes it hard to make up my mind!

Of course unchopped has as many fans as chopped. You need to remember that channelling/chopping a hot rod was invented to reduce wind resistance. For speed. The result that a lot of people like the "look" is secondary.

The word 'cool' is so general, personal and widely used, its hard to simply say what is and what isn't.

I really enjoy original designs of early cars, as they tell a story about the times in which they were made. To me that's rather interesting and unique, than cool.

I also enjoy well-balanced chopped and customized early cars, which also tell a story about the builder and the time they were made. That can be pretty cool.

What I find boring is the competitive quest to be more visually radical than whatever came before, regardless. Nothing cool or interesting about that.
However fun and entertaining for purely show effect or as a prop in a visual movie.

Ditto. And if I had a similar car, but it had been chopped, I would be sick right about now!

Arguably the most often chopped car in the world. Exactly why I didn't.

I chopped my '47 Plymouth back in about 1980. Whenever I see a stock one, the proportions seem a bit off.

  20. I've had 2 chopped cars, a 1939 Ford Convertible & a 1932 Ford roadster, as I have gotten older and at 6'4" I prefer my cars un-chopped.

    Both chopped & un-chopped are cool.HRP

Its not about which is cooler chopped or unchopped. Its about the flow of the car. The attitude. Some cars need a chop to flow and look finished. Sometimes a chop screws up an otherwise cool car. The whole package has to work together.

Most Fords are cooler with at least a little chop. Mopars had better proportions from the factory and are very cool un-chopped.
