steam lombard. predates cat and holt for lag driven machine(tracks). winter in the woods wreaked hell on the cast iron, and the poor freezing bastard who steered it, and hacked thru 18" on ice to plop hose off of boiler tank into lake. 2 of the same wreck. moving day gone all wrong.
In his 99 years, Rolla Vollstedt was a groundbreaking car builder and owner. Among his many accomplishments, he built and entered the first Offy rear-engine car at Indianapolis, and gave the great Jim Clark his last Indy Car ride. This the car that started it all in 1950. A beautiful T-body roadster.
The King Tower Cafe, just a mile from me. They recently had the indian head sign restored, and then closed for good due to losses from the shutdowns.
Troy Ruttman is obviously mad about his early exit from the 1957 Indianapolis 500. Troy had qualified the John Zink Special on the outside of row one. He then took the lead from pole-sitter, Pat O'Connor, and led the first 13 laps before the car failed. This is the same AJ Watson built car with which Pat Flaherty won the 1956
Bill Vukovich Jr in the #8 fights to hold off Paul Bates at a San Diego (El Cajon), California midget race in 1968. Vuky Jr didn't have the success his dad had at Indianapolis, but like his dad, he was an excellent midget racer. A couple of good looking Offy Midgets.
Another great colorization by Ron Rose of Jud Larson in the Pfrommer Offy in 1956! Check those skinny tires! David Knox is the original photograph
Looks to me like a Willys FC. I would love to get one... (along with about 100 other vintage cars, trucks, tractors.)
