To me, this single photo is what separates the McMullen roadster from “the others”. I will agree that as I have entered adulthood, this car has a bit too loud of a personality, but when I was ~ 15 years old seeing that photo for the first time, it was a completely different story.

First off thank you for going to the effort to show all those great detail shots. I have a couple of questions. Where do you put oil in this ? does it have a front of the manifold oil fill that just doesn't show in the pics? Also I see a frost plug inserted where the road draft tube would normally go. How does the crankcase breathe? I would think it would push oil out all over the place. Maybe I missed something , I looked and looked at the pics (which are great BTW)

You are welcome.... Dang good question. Sharp eye. I don't remember a filler tube. I looked at some more engine pics and none were any clearer than the ones posted. I don't think there is room between the blower snout and generator. One could pull a valve cover and fill it that way. As far as breathers there are none that I remember. But then again you need something especially with a blower . It's been a while since I was around the car. But I will call Dave or Roy and see if they know. Thanks again...

Tom bought the car in 1958 and at the time it was black. His first repaint was with metallic brown, described as Root Beer. After an engine compartment fire he painted it metalflake green as seen in the above photo. That’s Tom when the car was in a 1960 Rose Bowl parking lot show. It looks like he might be wearing a dress shirt and a tie and his buddy has a suit on, just like everybody wears to hot rod events right?
After the green ‘flake Tom went back to black and the flames appeared, then after the 1964 Muncie 4 spd/Chevy rear end update it was repainted black with flames again with pin striping by Kelly.

Even McMullen Roadster II and III are old enough now to probably need restoring. Anybody know where they are?

I guess the II version would be the blown 427 FE/C6 driveline. That car used the frame from the Chevy engined hot rod modified for the Ford engine which also required a set back firewall. When it was restored the suspension and other bits were available but Roy Brizio had to use a different original frame to duplicate the ‘63 car.
The III version had an IFS and ran a SBC with Moser DOHC heads. I guess that car is out there somewhere.

First of All, a Big Thanks for these Bitchin' pictures (sorry, that "b" word seemed appropriate). Is this car too over the top? Is the Hirohata Merc too over the top? Yes....to Both!! That's why they are what they are, Icons of Our Car Culture. Thanks again, Carp.
