I was worried about the flat on the side of the housing for oil circulation. I was worried about oil getting out and having low oil pressure. I know if you use a later dist in the early engines you will not have oil circulation. I just don’t know if it works the other way.
Andy that distributor is desirable and you could easily find someone who would trade you for a later point distributor. I know I would. Pat
Its works, but it has its own cap, rotor which you wont find on a saturday afternoon. In 57 they came out with the common window cap. I needed a new vacuum advance on my 55 unit, and I changed to a later dist when I saw the price for it.
This is a 56 dual quad distributor. It is complete and in excellent condition. It is ready to run. I just need to know if a 60 engine will oil OK.
I have always understood the groove in the distributor was to lube the lower dist. shaft bushing you can put a later dist. in a 265 without issue but if you put a 265 dist. into a later engine you may have a issue with getting oil forced up the shaft since the later engines(and 265 that have had the block modified under the rear cam bearing to be like the later engines ) can deliver too much oil to the dist. shaft.
Technically you can ! It will bolt straight in and run OK Give it a few days and the inside of the dizzy will be flooded with oil. This is due to the rear cam bearing on 57 and newer engines having constant flow to the lifter galleries and the dizzy having splash oiling. 55-56 Chevy's have a pulse oiling to the lifter galleries and pressure feed to the distributor. You can safely run a 57 and newer dizzy in an early 55-56 engine, but not recommended to do it the other way round. here's a 55- 56 dizzy showing the pressure feed and the oil drain above it This is how the lifter gallery meters the oil [in pulses]
