My 41 Plymouth dash. We painted all the nickel plated trim in a satin parchment to match the upholstery and tone the dash down. Also, I mounted Autometer instruments in a shadow box behind the original cutout. Speedo is mounted on the column in place of the tech and is GPS driven.

I should have straightened the steering wheel.

upload_2020-12-4_4-16-16.png HOT ROD DASH 1935 Chevy Sedan

    Hello,

When we visited my brother up in Northern California, he was busy getting his new house ready for living. He had a two car garage and an extra carport. We were in the middle of an “all over California” road trip to do some photo shoots in Santa Cruz, Oakland, and of all places, Davis, CA. There were several motorcycles, two older hot rods and this 35 Chevy sedan lined up for photos during the week.

Luckily, Davis CA is not a very large town back then. It is based on the community built around a huge University of California college for all kinds of subjects. My brother was doing some graduate research on various drugs affecting the brain. (Not the kind most normal college students use at their leisure...) At the end of two years, he had enough information to write a book and then got an offer to move to the University of Houston for advanced research. They even built a home made of bricks, as a local Texas requirement.

This 1935 Chevy was from Davis and we just happened to be at my brother’s house. We had met the owner at the Oakland Roadster show earlier and it fit into our itinerary during our photo shoot vacation road trip.

The 35 Chevy sedan had custom touches, the dash was set up as a hot rod with gauges and tach. The Moon Foot Pedal and three spoke steering wheel reminded us of our drag racing Willys Coupe from the old days. But, those bucket seats were some of the most comfortable seats we had been in for quite some time. At the time, a 1935 Chevy sedan was not the most popular brand or model to make into a hot rod. So, it had a bright spot for the editors when I showed them the photos weeks later, back home in So Cal.

The one thing we will remember about this photo shoot, besides visiting my brother and his family in a strange place, was this unusual 1935 Chevy Sedan. It was a nice hot rod for the times. Rod Action liked it enough to showcase it several months later.

    Thank you...

So, Jnaki, you gonna tell us what the seats were out of?

    Hey A,

The information I got, back then, was inconsistent. It was the idea that an off-kilter Chevy Sedan was made into a cool hot rod and in this case, had comfortable seats. As a matter of fact, it had 4 individual bucket seats inside. No photos of that interior, other than of the dash and those front seats.

It was a colorful 1935 Chevy, but those old Ektachrome 35 mm slides are long gone to the owner. The Candy Tangerine paint was very bright.

It was a long way to go for photos, but that was the way it was back then. A cool road trip with someone you like, great scenery/photo locations all over Northern California and a stop over to see my brother in Davis, CA.

My 1933 Willys. Did the dash myself with Cratex from Eastwood. I found a piece of stainless steel in the scrap yard just big enough. The edge is beaded with a bead roller I built. 2003-12-31 23.00.00-3.jpg
