Here's a picture of my 58 impala 1966, also had a 56 and a 57, same look, note rear tires are larger than front, wide as I could get back then. I was a fan of whitewalls, black wheels, baby moons. I started 1964, custom wheels were first becoming available, if you go that route, Cragers, American Torque Thrust and chrome reverse were the most common that I remember and had all of them up into 70's. Still like chrome reverse. Check my albums for pics. If you are going for a racing look make yourself a pair of 15" chevy wheels, easy peasy, drill out rivets, flip center, weld in, close stem hole, drill new one.I had a pair with street slicks for several years for my chevys, made many sets for friends in HS shop class, also a big "thing" here in Milwaukee Wi. was to take front bumper off for gasser look, police harassed you back in the day and probably will now. Good Luck, post your car when done.[IMG]

One thing I just have to say is, painted smoothie wheels are completely different looking than OE style steel wheels with smooth caps. I can't hate on smoothie wheels too terribly hard, as I have used them in the past, but the look is a lot different than using original style steel wheels and adding a "baldie" type cap. The smoothie has a much smaller cap, that's almost flush with the stamping of the center of the wheel, and really isn't period correct until probably the 70's at the earliest.

  7. My go to when I was a kid on just about anything was 9.00x15 on the rear and 6.00-7.00x15 on the front. Mostly everyone was going to 14s by then but an old guy that I raced with said that was his tire combo in the '50s before he had slicks.

You could find a reference chart and match those sizes in radial tires.

  13. I'm friends with the guy on Facebook who built that car, I'll try and remember to ask him the wheel sizes.

Those two black 55s in the pics are super cool!

It’s funny to me how many times I come across this picture of the “black car.” IMG_4558.JPG

At the time I had broken a 5 spoke when I lost a tire and replaced it with a pair of really crusty original 55 wheels that had been chromed, reversed and that I painted flat black. Not to mention the cheap 3 yr old paint job was coming off when this was taken.
    IMG_4556.JPG

Black primer replaced the crap paint until I can afford real paint and 5 spokes went back on all 4 corners. IMG_4565.JPG

The car that made a lasting impression on me when I was young was a competion yellow 55 Chevy, straight axle, fenderwell headers and big and little Crager SS mags. I will never forget the first time I saw it rumbling up main st.
    So my vote: Crager SS.

I'd go with chrome steel wheels. Personally I like the look of bare body color steel wheels, and plan to go with those on my 57, but I also really like skinny whites on black steel wheels with baby moons. I'll put it this way, any hub caps will have to come off when you go fast anyway :p As long as you don't throw a set of corvette ralleys on it you'll be okay...

It all depends on what narrow time frame you are seeing as "Traditional" Before around 1965/66 Damned few customs or even hot street cars ran black walls and most ran the latest style of whitewall you were seeing on the new cars on the showroom floor.
I had black walls on my 55 Buick Special in 1966 with silver painted wheels and beauty rings and caught flack from a lot of guys who thought it was a sacrilege to run it without white walls. That was at the very start of the mag wheel and blackwalls that has continued to this day.
Even in late 1968 when I had my dad Special order a 69 Olds Cutlass S when I was in Vietnam I had to argue for black wall tires and poverty caps but put chrome reverse wheels on it the second day I had it as that was my plan. We didn't get the deal all done early enough to do it the first day I owned it.

There's a lot of great replies on here and everyone is entitled to their experience.
I personally think if you're going for a 50's look the '56 in @jnaki 's video and @Super/Stock Poncho 's car are spot on to all the pictures my Dad took at the drags and cruising around with his buddies at that time.
Somebody else mentioned taking off the front bumper and at least where my Dad was, is what everyone was doing.

  26. I generally will lean towards personal preference over authenticity for my build. It’s great to hear everyone’s experiences with their cars over the years though.
