thanks for posting these pictures. old bar-b-q was owned for many years by Buzz Kaplan and was sold after his death. i had a ride in it several times and actually helped unload the pile of parts from a truck after he brought it home for rebuilding. one of the guys involved with the reconstruction was one of my flight instructors.

the bar-b-q is a reference to the tail numbers that was on it when he got it out of Canada. you can see the current tail number end with OTC as in OTC tools

I am way ahead of you. I used to stop by owatonna at BAR ( born again restorations) and visit with buzz's crew of incredible craftsmen. When buzz was alive he would come out to the sea plane base at Oshkosh and shoot the breeze and buy an annual T-shirt from me. The old bar b que was from when Gary underlund had built the plane in what was left over from a hog pen on his property. Pretty sad ending about buzz and the Curtiss Jenny crash, even more sad when the heritage halls Musuem closed as well. During the time that buzz was alive, he had an incredible adventurous life. I used to stop by on my way home from Oshkosh each year to see the incredible build progress of the Sikorsky replica his crew built for johnsons wax, and the second one that was painted in zebra stripes, if you scroll back through some of the pages, you can see it in the hangar.
The Waco, (old bar b que) now belongs to Carl Buck in Colorado.
I have also posted pictures of it flying. Glad you enjoyed the pictures I have shot!
    Dennis.

  7. This is the bi-plane that belonged to my late friend Paul Esque, he scared the crap out of me in that plane but was a amazing pilot, I later learned he learned to fly in that plane.

This is really great guys. Some awesome pics. I joined because I love old cars of all types and I wanted to share my Corvair with others.
I am a pilot as well as a car junkie so finding this thread (thanks 41 GMC K-18) is great. This coming fall will be 30yrs with a license.
My father is a pilot who holds 7 different type ratings and one of them is a DC-3.
    He has had a 57 Cessna 180A since 1974.
Many great adventures in the 180.

Here is a couple picks I shared with 41 GMC K-18.
The Howard belongs to a friend of my dad and I and has a float kit. It now spends its summers on floats. VERY COOL.
The Fairchild was restored and spends it's time in the aviation museum. It is airworthy and flown occasionally. Fairbanks North Star-20130609-00023.jpg IMG-20120506-00014.jpg

I was going through some photos and this one seemed appropriate given we are in full on winter mode up here. A high temp of 14 and plenty of snow.
This is a family friends Cessna 185. It fits 2 fold as it's a hot rod with a black edition 550 swinging its blades. Bitchin!!

I remember reading about the Curtis Robin in flight endurance record. Took off June 4, 1035 and landed July 1, 1935 for a total of 635 hrs and 34 minutes flight time. It had a catwalk built along both sides of the cowl that he could walk out on and add oil and the plane was refueled in flight by another plane flying overhead and dropping a fuel line to the Curtis. I don't know how to post a link for it but if you google "curtis robin in flight refueling", there's the whole story with pictures.

You are very welcome, and I am glad that you got to talk to Gary's son. I feel fortunate that I got to have the encounters I had with Buzz and Gary and the wonderful crew that used to exist as " BAR " at the Owatonna Airport.

If you are interested and this is purely a suggestion and nothing more, I do have T-Shirts with " Old Bar- B- Que " on them from the 2014 gathering at the Oshkosh Seabase. You can contact me via the PM if this interests you.

    All are beautiful aircraft.
I thought I would share a tid bit of information on the Corsair.
The gull wing was designed out of necessity for clearance for the large diameter of the prop. Remember the Navy was operating the Corsair off of carriers.
Turned out to be the F-4U trademark.
Forced induction radials are sweet sounding.

I thought I would share a great story from my youth with everyone.
I grew up with aviation in my life and love every minute of it. My dad flew commercially in a career that spans 6 decades.
When I was 10/11 yrs old I got to fly in the jump seat of a C-130-30 Hercules for an air show with my dad at the controls. It is an experience that I will never forget.
We had a cargo of 3 Mustang convertibles with 6 state beauty queens and drivers for each car.
The airshow was on a short unimproved air strip around 3000 ft.
Outside the company ramp everyone got on board and seated. I was handed a pair of David/Clark's and we got under way.
The airshow field was only minutes away and we put on a show.
We entered the pattern high and slow, when we turned base we started descending quicky building air speed through base and final only we were lining up to buzz the field.
I remember hearing the gear warning horn going off. Looking out the windows at the crowd trying to hold on to their hats. We then trade airspeed for altitude and set up for a STOL series.
We land that puppy to a full stop in 1100 ft. Lower the cargo ramp and the Mustangs and Beauty queens drive off into the crowd.
Raise the cargo ramp and take off on the remaining 1900ft and climb like a bat out of hell.
This was an amazing experience for a young boy and solidified my father as my hero.
I figured an aviation story was appropriate in this thread.

    Hey Norm.
That is indeed a very cool and unique experience you had in that jump seat with your dad at the controls of the " Herky Bird " !
I know exactly how that feels, from that kind of energy and excitement, I used to work with a crew out of Cold Bay and King Salmon Alaska, " Winky's flying fish circus ". I had gotten off of a vessel that I was working on, ( the chief engineer was nuts and we parted ways ). I flew out of Port Moller to Cold Bay, I just happened to discover that a particular D.C. 3 that used to be based at Arlington Washington, was now sitting on the ramp out at Cold Bay. I had seen that same D. C. 3 in King Salmon a year before, so I went over and found the owner, and I finished out that season with them hauling fresh fish from King Salmon over to a processing plant in Kodiak. I was a ramp rat and a truck driver to pick up fish from the set net sites on the beach out around Naknek there in Bristol Bay.

I will never forget just how cool it was to be in the right seat on that trip up the chain from Cold Bay to King Salmon. James Wirth the young pilot at that time, he was 25 and he had accumulated 1900 hours of D.C. 3 time, I told him how the D.C. 3 was my favorite aircraft and he could see that I was eager to fly it. He said take off your boots, and fly it in your bare feet with socks on, the rudder is big and you can feel it a lot better with the boots off, and he was right ! I took the controls and got a feel for it and he let me fly it all the way back up the chain till we got to King Salmon, we were at about 1000 ft all of the way and it was a great experience.

That is really cool. Thanks for sharing that. I have been a fan of the "Doug" since I was a kid.
I don't know how many models I built of that aircraft.
It's amazing that many are still being worked today after all these years. A true classic.

Back in 2000, I was on my way home from Oshkosh, and there were fires going on in Montana. I stopped in at the Montana Smoke Jumpers base there in Missoula. I new my way around the airport and I drove out to the perimeter where this very cool Sikorsky Sky Crane was being serviced. Back then one didn't have to worry about airport security. I took the opportunity to get some really good shots of the Sky Crane up close so that the detail could be seen. This was with slide film, and the light was just right. I was very fortunate to get these shots. I made sure that all of the crew got a T-Shirt from me for allowing me to get these shots.

Those shots are great. They really showcase how purpose built the Sky Crane is.
Designed for ease of maintenance in the field. The cool part is that I find it aesthetically pleasing. All the mechanical bits showing.

    Hey guys,
Anyone have any pics of Cessna 195s. On wheels or floats. Always liked the look with the strutless wing.
When they are polished they look so cool.
Some day I would like to own one. With a few mods of course.

Back in 2012 was when this incredible Cessna 195 showed up at the Seabase out on Lake Winnebago at the annual Oshkosh Fly in. I used the shot I shot, to make the 2013 annual shirt. The plane lives in Rising Sun Indiana and the owner uses it on the Ohio River as a sight seeing plane. Its really beautiful !
