Hot Rods Bumpers or no bumpers ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Nov 30, 2020.

  1. I've noticed there seems to be to camps of thought, some like them and some don't, I have had a few hot rods that I ran sans bumpers and other cars that I thought looked better with them.

Naturally a hiboy with a bumper would look odd, but vars like a '55 Chevy set up like a gasser looks better without a front bumper IMHO.

Do you prefer bumpers or not. HRP

I’ve been considering sans bumper on my 40 Coupe.
What do y’all think about bumperless hot rod ‘40s?

I like bumpers on everything full fendered no matter what it is. Without fenders it depends; I like nerf bars.

How about a hiboy with nerf bars? Since this picture was taken, it has had a dip in the chrome tank, much better. IMG_0996.JPG

  8. If its got fenders its needs bumpers on a 28-34. Now like on a 32-34 pickup only needs the front bumper. rear bumpers on the pickups look odd. I like bumpers on 35-41 cars. I agree a 55 Chevy with a gasser stance needs the front bumper removed. 56's look odd with no bumper, same with a 57

When I bought my '40, the bumper, stainless trim and wipers had been removed with holes filled. I put it all back on the car, changed out the wheels and tires and had Nostalgia Sid drop the front axle 2 inches. I like it a lot better now.

No bumpers on my '34 but do have them on my '55. I am thinking about taking the front off on the '55.

I pulled the rear bumper on my 1950 Chevy pickup but kept the front bumper. Front looks at home but the rear was just hanging out there.....I even flipped it around and still didn’t like it.

If they aren't actually at a height that would work, does it matter if they are there or not? The paint and body work is going to be expensive, regardless. Cruisers, why not? Racier cars, who needs the weight?

  19. I think a '32 bumper on the rear of a pickup looks great if the owner uses the right parts, on my '32 I used sedan delivery bumper irons and that tucked the bumper in closer to the bed, the 33/34 bumpers are a little larger. HRP

  20. Hot rods are ever evolving if you keep it for a long time, personally I thank the current version is perfect. HRP

  21. My former Bossman wanted bumpers on a build we were doin. Most of us thought he was crazy.
We had a nice set of OE 32 bumper and mocked up on the car. They looked ok but bulky.
So talk started about scaling down a set of bumpers.
After some drawing, the shop machinist built a die for a narrower 32 bumper. I think these are around 3/4 of an inch narrower.
Hammered out in a Pullmax and scrolled by hand.

  22. Yeah the 33/34 pickup bumpers are large and not very good looking. I have a 32 on the front of my 33 and nothing out the back.

my 34 3w currently has no bumpers. i like it, but lets face the facts, its god damned expensive metal to even bump into a a post you dont see out of either mirror (CDL driver, i use mirrors). it will get some kinda rear bumper, and maybe nerf bars on the front. fenders are for sissys. bumpers serve a purpose.

Most states have a law that says you must have bumpers, and give the minimum and maximum height of the bumper also.

It depends on the look. Most fat fender and later look better with (except maybe a gasser) but there are alway exception.. its the 30s and earlier full fender cars it depends. highboys no fenders.

  30. Depends on the car! Gassers are cool without a front bumper, the same car only lowered would need a bumper or at least a roll pan. Early iron could go either way...
On my A I ran a rear bumper with no front...

    On my '46, I didn't run any...
