Well I got Monday out of the way so I am now sitting with it on cruise until Turkey day. We had a great time with the Cobra this past weekend. We met a lot of nice folks and probably talked way too much about the car, but they asked! LOL We met quite a few Yahoos as well and had some pretty good laughs at their expense. I thought I might share a few with you.

Right after we got the display set up and the car cleaned etc. we all sat down for a bit. A guy asked if it was alright to walk on the flooring and get a closer look. I said no problem. He spent at least 30 minutes mulling over every inch of the car, shaking his head and smiling. Finally he comes over and asks if I own it. I said yes. He said I have always loved this car, when I was in 8th grade I built a model of it. I never thought in a million years I would ever get to see it in person. He thanked us for bringing it out to the show and walked on. I didn't have the heart to tell him... LOL

We met our fair share of self-professed Cobra experts this past weekend. LMAO! I overheard one of them say to his a buddy there are several ways to tell a real Cobra from a replica. He said first off, all Cobras have knock off wheels like this one. Also no Cobra ever had windshield wipers. And finally all Cobras came with the very distinctive 427 side oiler just like this one...Even Zoe raised her eyebrows at that one. The buddy finally made it over to where we were sitting and asked if we knew any of the history on the car. I said oh yes, I know all of it. About two years ago we took 16 pieces of fiberglass roughly shaped like a Cobra into my shop and yesterday we rolled this thing out and brought it to the show. I really enjoyed that...

I had to cut a piece of Lexan to fit over the baby Cobra barrel to keep them for getting away. I came back late Friday (set up day) just before they closed the doors to deliver a race seat to friend. I am walking back by the display and there is a family there. Mom, Dad and about 5 kids. The Mom reads the sign, looks in the barrel and laughs out loud. It made me smile that some else thought it was funny. She shows all the kids and just as I am turning the corner I hear her say, so do you kids just want the cars or the ones still in the packages. I stopped in my tracks. I hear the Dad say, I want one in the package it will be worth more money. I came back around and said are you guys actually taking the cars from the display. And the Mom says yes, they are free. I said I don't they are free. She said well the car owner told us we could take them. I said oh, so you know the owner. She said yes. I said I bet you $100 you don't. She said what is that supposed to mean? I said because you are looking at the owner and he has know idea who the hell you are! I had them escorted from the building.

There were quite a few comments about the transverse leaf spring up front. Several folks simply asking about it. One guy new why it was there and really appreciated the distance we had gone to complete the look. And finally I heard a guy tell his buddy while pointing it out, "See I told you it was a kit car, they are still running the VW front suspension! I beat that guy to death with a piece of round Lexan I found nearby. LOL

I met a cool guy wearing a Ford Hoody (emblem on the front). He showed me photos of his Factory 5 Cobra and we talked a while. As he walked away, this is what his hoody said on the back. Breast Implants and Fiberglass Cobras, both are fake but they are sure fun to play with! LOL

A real mouth breather wearing a shop shirt stopped in and gave me several pieces of advice on how to make the Cobra look more realistic. Big fender flares like the real ones, lose the grill because Cobras never had them, get rid of the gasser tank on the radiator and finally put a Ford motor in it. He likes to see a Ford in a Ford.

AND finally, as noted above Dad's grill was received with mixed reviews. LOL At least three more guys tried to tell us that Cobra's never had grills, a couple more noticed it and thinking it was real, asked where we got it. Dad showed them how we made it. They were very appreciative of the work. One moron said it looked pretty good on the car even though it doesn't belong there but wondered where we got it. I told him the truth, Lowes. And the last mouth breather of all mouth breathers said it didn't look right with a grill and asked what kind of car we took it off of. I told him we had a 1950s Ferrari 375 in the shop and we took its grill and cut it down to fit. He was on his phone googling something (I assume a Ferrari 375). He looks at the phone, and back at the car and says cool. And walks away. Apparently he did not read anything about the photos as I think the last 375 that went up for auction sold for something like $12 million US. LMAO! Yep we took a grill out of $12M car and cut it down to fit! And with all of that being said, what the hell, wouldn't you have rather seen the Ferrari. Cool.

Remember, God gave us two ears and one mouth. That's so we can listen twice as much as we talk. I never could understand why guys want to tell you so much about somebody else's car.

Always fun to hear someone explaining the details of a car to the guy who built it.

Sounds like you really enjoyed this event, some people would have been more stressed out about some of that.
The story of the kids and the model cars reminded me of a (kind of) related story.
In the mid 70's I belonged to a car club, mostly drag racing oriented, a club member/friend of mine did chassis work out of his home garage and had just finished a tube framed Maverick gas class car for another club member, (which I later owned).
He had a Pinto gas car he built for himself and they were invited to display them with some other drag cars at a local mall for the weekend.
We set the display up Friday night and went to check it out the next day, as we were walking up we noticed the drivers side door was open on one of the cars and when we got to the cars there was a guy and woman standing there and a little kid was sitting in it (trying to) turn the steering wheel back and forth while making vroom vroom sounds.
Almost in unison, the three of us said something like WTF ARE YOU DOING, the idiot father goes he's playing race car driver, isn't that what they are here for.
Needless to say he got a very embarassing berating in front of his wife and kid.
    CRIPES!

    Awesome stories,
Welcome to the world of owning a non-original cobra.

One time at a show this fella was inspecting my Factory Five Cobra and told me that mine looks just like a real one he knows about. I asked where he saw a real cobra and he then proceeded to describe my house exactly. I said the owner of the real one sounds like a cool guy and let him walk away.

No BS I once saw a guy rap his knuckles on a fibreglass cobra, the cobra owner asked what he was doing and the guys says “just checking if it’s real” the cobra owner walked right up to the the guy’s wife and grabbed her tits and said just checking if they’re real!. The wife slapped her husband and stormed off!

I promise you’ll get many more of these stories.

Well we made a pretty cool score today. I certainly never expected it when we left the house this morning. Every Saturday Dad, Zoe and me head over to a nearby small town for breakfast. Since Covid we still go but get take out. We sit in the truck waiting for trains and watching Andy Griffith on Prime while we eat. Then we take back roads home looking for old cars stashed behind barns etc.

This morning just as we rolled back into town Dad says hey was that a Cobra? I missed it so we went around the block for another look. Sure enough what looked to be a Cobra nose was poking out amidst a bunch of other junk. I whipped in across the street.

To be honest. The grill looked more like an Austin Healy but then I saw the SC427 badge on the fender. Just as I started to have a look a lady popped out the door. I said is this a Cobra? She said yes. She asked if I saw it advertised on Craigslist? I said no we just happened to drive by.

I said so obviously it is for sale. She said yes, we are selling everything in here this weekend. Without even seeing the rest of it I asked how much? She shot me a price that I thought was stupid cheap. For the hell of it I offered half and she said done.

Dad about fell over. He is so excited. We just got home with it a few minutes ago.

I guess I didn't look close enough. The sign on the door of the shop said 50% off everything. $12. LMAO.

All I got to say is, "That's too much!" No, not the price, but the whole story. It made my day! Right place at the right time. Ron

My tip to Springfield today cost a little more than that but came home with a 409 block some 690 heads and two big boxes full of miscellaneous 63 Chevy parts.

Well we are kind of bummed out today. We had planned on taking the Cobra out and get Larry a "drag slick shreading, quarter panel rubber coating BURNOUT!!!" Lol

But after finally getting rid of all the family etc. from Thanksgiving the weather has decided not to cooperate. It has been beautiful here since Thursday but today, cold and raining.

So I hit the shop this morning and disassembled the little Cobra.

    20201129_092257.jpeg

Then I started sanding the body down. Because it is stamped steel, I took a hammer and dolly to the embossed side vents and added a bit of filler there to smooth the area out.

I expect one of Dad's eggcrate grills, too. That expanded metal just doesn't cut it in a build of this caliber.

Exactly. AND check this out. This was fast! After I typed the hood scoop message, I went looking. One of those not sure what I am looking for but I will know it when I see it searches. LOL

Anyway I started in the shop kitchen where honestly, a few pieces of tupperware (lids) were looking fairly promising. Then I popped into the tech closet and when I saw it, I knew we were gold!

This is an old computer desktop speaker. There was only one of them so I figure it is basically trash.

    Resized_20201201_144643.jpeg
Check out the shape on either end! Absolutely perfect. So I tore it apart (basically just emptied the case) and headed back out to the shop's cut off saw. I carefully cut the ends off and this is what I got.

    Resized_20201201_142554.jpeg
To be perfect in scale with the stripes I printed and cut today, the scoop needs to be 3" wide at the mouth.

    Resized_20201201_142612.jpeg
Damn, I am good. Or at least lucky. And you know what they say, I would rather be lucky than good any day! LOL

    Resized_20201201_142600.jpeg
Tell me that is not the perfect little Cobra scoop!

LMAO! Dad was laughing last night about the next car show. He said we need to keep this little car somewhere close to where we are sitting, in relation to the Cobra. And when someone asks if this is a real one or is this fiberglass etc., we both pop and say yep, its a real one, all aluminum, head right to the toy and start banging on it and talking about how original it is...LMAO again! Great minds think a like!
