Enjoyed the thread and have red wheels but, the truth is, it would be pretty boring if we all did the same thing......I like it all!

Resale red is one color I just don’t like.

I’ve looked at otherwise nice cars that have black paint or another nice exterior color (not red) and then the inside is covered top to bottom in bright red upholstery. Yuck !

Going back to 1952... there was an old hot rod adage. The older guys said it, I laughed.
But I believed it, so it goes.

"If it don't go, chrome it. If ya can't chrome it, paint it red." Gospel.

probably , I am not old enough to know.
But what I’ve noticed, and very much again looking through this thread is red wheels look great on some cars and not so good on others.

It is my belief that if you see the wheels first, when looking at a car, then they are the wrong colour.
( sometimes the white wall tyres detract from the car also, not the wheels).
If you see the car, and then notice the wheels, someone got it right.

my preference is same colour wheels as the car, with a little chrome added. More than two colours gets confusing. These wheels were red, no white walls, so I painted them different to distract from the hideous Matt black.

I really dig the red with white walls on a black ride. It depends on the car paint for me. Red wheels would look hideous on my car, but a lot in this thread I really think look fantastic. I suppose the eye of the beholder takes precedent here...

  12. I don't get it.
Before 1960 it was 'full wheel covers' or go home.
After 1960 it was "mags"/alloys unless you were driving your mom's car.
Sure, there were steel wheels that were personalized with paint....... but usually by guys that didn't know how to work on engines.
Idon'no?? It kind'a seems like rockabilly chicks getting tattoos "just like the old days". o_O

No rockabilly chicks are getting tattooed to be like the old days. That's old-people thinking.

They are taking what they see as the best of the past, and combining it with what they see as the best of today, to make their own version of the future.

You don't need to like it, or even understand it.

It belongs to them, not you. You don't get a say in it.

I'd do red wheels, if my car was red.

Never saw a reason to make steel wheels a focal point, wheels should flow with the look of the car, the contrast is distracting to me.

Have had a few 40's with red wheels--fooling with a black 40 now--has red wheels too. Just not doing it for me this time. Thinking black with rings and caps. Wife wants WW but I'm not sure I want to do that again.

    Hello,

When my brother bought his new 1958 Chevy Impala, immediately, the full size hubcaps came off. We had to keep taking them off at Lion’s Dragstrip to run in the A/Stock class, so he just decided to leave them off. But, at the time, all of his friends were in the wheel/hubcap looking stage and many different looks were tried. Most had 15 inch wheels, so the Impala had tape to hold up the borrowed hubcaps/spinners/discs. We also tried a myriad of painted wheels.

Since the interior was a red/orange, we painted one side of the wheels, red. Then added small hubcaps. It looked really nice matching the red interior. But a quick drive around the block and back to black it was. For a while, it was black, then one day I painted all 4 rims silver and that took off quite well with the small hubcaps. It looked like a different kind of chrome rim.

By my senior year in high school, it was small 59 Chevy hubcaps and a set of beauty trim rings. It stayed that way until I had a windfall cash supply and bought a set of 5 Buick Skylark wire wheels. Now, it was pretty much finished with the new look of a custom hot rod that was a fast drag race car.

    upload_2020-12-3_4-25-47.png 1963-64 @themoose thanks…

Finally, after the Buick Skylark theft incident, it was back to black Buick rims with blackwall tires, until late 1964 when it drove away with a new owner. We had to sell one to get another car.

What was the best look for our 58 Impala? It had to be what we both really wanted, a set of American Racing Equipment, original 5 spoke mag wheels. That would have been the final look of the Impala and perhaps a long time keeper. But, in our days, we sold one to get another in the field of our family cars.

So, when I found this photo of a black Impala with red wheels and small hubcaps, of course, memories started flowing back to our last Long Beach house and me sitting on the concrete, masking off the tires and rims to be sprayed red.
    upload_2020-12-3_4-28-30.png
It is an image that was old school in 1958-59 and is a trend for the present day hot rod guys/girls that want that look from the way back machine.
