you cant beat lacquer !!!!!

 

So I'm about to,paint my OT LBC and I'm debating between painting it in pieces or just painting th winterized, jambs, underside of hood and trunk lid. Any thoughts on the matter?

Also, grey primer with the hood, trunk lid, doors, fenders in black epoxy sealer. So if going with a light burgundy is black ok or should I go with grey. I'm not going to have the primer or sealer tinted. Should I seal the whole thing or could I get away with some grey some black. I'll be using single stage paint.

 

I would make sure your primer is either all gray or all black, otherwise it will not be uniform in the final color!

 

This was a covid project for me. It was actually on my New Years project list for 2020, when covid hit and all my blues gigs ended, I decided to the project. This was a true driveway (rattle can) paint job.

I still need to do the below the belt line. Currently there is about 4 different shades of black. I need to make it all 1 shade, and I think I've finally settled on the paint I'm going to use.

The blue consists of a couple of coats of Krylon True Blue, a couple coats of Krylon Shimmer Metallic Candy Blue Razz, and a couple coats of Spray Maxx 2K clear.

^^^That Spraymax 2K is the catalyzed clear with the activation button on the bottom of the can, right? How was it working with that? I'm about to use that on some small panels on my coupe? Got any close up shots of the finished product you'd be willing to share?

That last shot under the tree is KILLER

 

I painted my pickup in my back yard.
Two tone.
Base coat / clear coat.
Started at the crack of dawn with first taping.
Finished after sunset with bugs sticking to the clear coat.

Never again.

From 20 ft away it looks gorgeous. But up close the flaws from hurried pace and bad environment show up.

I'll rent a paint booth before I ever do a two stage, two tone job outside.

 

This is the only close up I've got, probably not what you're looking for. I can try to get out and take a shot of the cowl later.


The Spray Maxx 2K is nice to work with, it sprays excellent; with a great nozzle, the best I've ever seen or used on a spray can. I actually took one of the nozzles and used it on the cans of metallic blue too, one reason I was able to lay that down as nice as it came out.

Note, I never did wet sand it and rub it out, it definitely could use it, especially along the back panel around the back window, there is a slight amount of orange peel. I guess I was just so happy with it after years of looking at it the way it was I just wasn't motivated enough to rub it out. I think it's too late to do that now, but I'm OK with it, it is just a truck afterall.

 

Those trees are only in bloom a few weeks out of the year. It was perfect timing to park it there and take the shot.

 

When I did mine, I had everything taped off and ready to go the night before. In the morning I started about 6 am, hung a plastic drop cloth on one side of the awning (the direction the wind blows from when it starts), swept the driveway and hosed it down, then started spraying, leaving ~20 minutes between coats, I was done spraying by 10:30 or so, just as a light breeze started. I ended up with no bugs or leafs or anything in the finish.

A booth would be nice, I'm not sure if there are any to rent around here.

 

Built a temporary paint booth (I'm sure that is a different thread in itself) just in front of my bay door. Rolled the car out, shot two coats of S-W Genesis single stage, and rolled it back in. No over spray inside. I did sand all the filler primer inside by putting up plastic to contain the dust.

 

Did some parts for my COE on the porch and in the yard .

 

About a month ago I totally redid my 4x4 f1... all sprayed outside.

 

It took 5 years to finally get my truck painted. Lots of orange peel and some runs but at least I can start to put it back together and maybe even drive the old beast again. No better way to spend a vacation than out in the garage.

 

@Ford52PU runs just mean you got enough on to sand and buff!

 

It's been two months without any new posts. Surely someone has something to share with us.

 

Well the fellow building a Pacific Industries 5W posted that he's sprayed outdoors recently in sub zero temps. Now that has my interest... I've still have to hookup my radiant heating system but for those who don't have heat this could be a real game changer.

 

About all I have done on this topic in recent months is paint my 1/8 scale Mysterion. Used same paint as I used on the 1:1 version.

• white primer
• catalyzed urethane clear with white pearl dust
• urethane base coat/clear coat using HOK candy Lime Gold toner
• pinstripe with Robin's Egg blue 1/64" ChartPak striping tape (this is different from the big car of course which was professionally striped)
• bubble was tinted with clear urethane with HOK cobalt blue candy toner

 

Finally got my tailgate painted after driving around for 5 or 6 years in primer. Tractor supply enamel with hardner. It came out ok I should do the rest of the truck some day.

 

Built a ‘spray booth’ in my garage, repainted a Model A with House of Kolor Black Cherry candy base coat. One coat of sealer, two of black ground coat, 4 of color, 2-3 of clear. A real spray booth would have been better, but it worked pretty good. Eastwood gun, help from a friend.

Second to last picture is a reflection in the trunk lid.

 

Great looking color and car.

Painted mine in the shed at home with Rustoleum. My motto is, If you can't do it yourself, it don't need doing!

I did say that.... and I mean it. So I'm trying to do this one good enough that I 0don't feel the need to do it again.

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure this is it for shiny, at least whole cars.

This one would have stayed a beater if the idiot that's typing this wouldn't have caught it on fire.

Plus, beaters don't require alot of washing

 

That looks really good... What kind of paint did you use? Also, what type of spray gun / cup did you use?
