Maybe just cut a hole and run a polished aluminum surfer scoop.

Only way I'd want a hole in a hood would be if there was a blower sticking through it!

True, but not on a classic like that Ranchero. Under hood superchargers give the stop light heros a big surprise.
Walk softly, but carry a big stick.

  4. I said this before and this is the last time. If you gotta run that tunnel ram then you don't need no stinkin hood.

  5. No hood scoops is best on 57 Fords, don't ruin a pretty car. JW

  6. These guys don't understand the direction you want to go with the car, if your thread title was 57 ranchero gasser nobody would mind a scoop.
VFN Fiberglass makes a couple different sizes of them

Found this on another thread. The tunnel ram is covered but you get the picture.

  9. I don't know if I'm going towards the gasser style. It just happens that my current engine has a tunnel ram.
However the quarters are fairly rusty and the easy repair would be to radius them out like a gasser

First thing I would do is measure the tunnel ram to see just how much room you are going to need. It doesn't matter what scoops you like until you know exactly how tall it has to be. If its not too high, I would consider grafting one of the T bird scoops into the hood as they will keep a nice flowing look rather than a large box.
My opinion, bolt on scoops almost always look like an afterthought and I never cared for how they look. Its your car though, so my opinion really doesn't matter. To tell the truth, It probably looks best with the tunnel ram just sticking out of the hood. I'd get an extra hood so if you get tired of the tunnel ram, you can switch back.
Of course you could always look into cutting and welding to make the tunnel ram just tall enough to fit under the hood scoop of your choice...........

Tunnel rams aren't really well suited for daily driving, as they have lots of opportunity for fuel to attach to the walls and make equal fuel distribution difficult. If it were mine, I'd consider one of those unmentionable systems hidden on the backside of the intake tubes and dummy carbs up top working as air intakes only.

In stall the engine in your car. then take some round rod and shape it to the contour of your hood front to back . That way you can see how much the carbs and manifold will extend out of the hood line and how much of a scoop it will take to cover it. although many of the suggestions would be cool if all you wanted was a hood scoop. but there is nothing dumber looking than a hood with a scoop and a hole cut in it for so the carbs clear. and unless the rest of the car resembles a real badass drag car a tunnel ram is totally out of place. Just my 2 cents ;) Larry

  14. If you ditch the tunnel ram and get just a high rise intake perhaps a 52-54 Mercury style hood scoop would give you some extra clearance.

I wouldn't touch that hood, if you're not going to fully repaint that thing I don't think its worth it to ruin the patina of the car right now for the tunnel ram. I'd ditch the tunnel ram and get a decent single 4bbl intake on it and run with that.

  16. How about the fomoco tear drop or just the carbs with a Hilborn type scoop for that street brawler look ? Just don't bend to building something for someone else instead of for yourself, tell these guys your not building a custom or a stocker, you want something with some meat and potatoes to it.
I know these are gassers but just concentrate on the hood.

Here's a few you look at. May give you a better idea of what you like. 19. This link has a good sampling of '57 Fords. I think only 2 have scoops. Check out the potential of a stock hood.

  21. No real patina to speak of. Just a crappy paint job. However when the quarters get fixed, this paint will be gone.

Wouldn't be my choice either but it's probably the most functional scoop that's been posted so far.

That car I've seen at Mission raceway and I'm pretty sure he runs out of Idaho.
It has a 351 stroked Windsor. Cool car.

I dislike all three of those scoops on a '57 Ford. I prefer no scoop at all, but if you really wanted a scoop, I'd get one of the Offenhauser aluminum scoops still made today. They look period, and would fit the car better.

  27. I never added a scoop to the car. I did however trade it off. Long story short, I now have a 63 Falcon, 2 door sedan delivery.
