I know someone with a 283 for sale in Pasadena,

  3. Ran some heater hoses (edited out the stuff somebody does not like to see) and mounted an ambulance throttle solenoid in the trunk; still have to hook up the cable to the trunk latch.

Finally found a truck in the junkyard with the same engine got the dipstick off tried putting it on the ol hot rod and the dang ol steering box is in the way. So now I either have to get creative with the brake line bender or finally suck it up and spend the $80 to get an aftermarket one

Well, today I played musical cars between the shop and carport. I had to get my current project inside for the winter. Oh and I cleaned up my mess in the shop from summer!

Sorted my nuts. After 40 years of storing lug nuts in coffee cans, bags, I finally bought a cheapo HF storage rack just for them. 7/16 bottom row, 1/2 top row, long shank, short shank, steel wheel, E/T.. Room leftover for valve stems, tire patches, studs..

Drove 35 miles to help an older buddy put new batteries in his motorhome then came home and modified my tranny cross-member to bolt up on my '50 Fleetline. Got to get my new welder hooked up and used it for the first time- finally got 220 wired in so I can actually weld now!

We wanted to keep the weight distributed evenly over the crossmember for better balance ( it wouldn't balance on the crossmember, so I had to set it on the motor mounts!!)

My driving experience was not nearly as good as yours was though!

  22. Not seeming to accomplish much this last week. The shift lever and signal arm for the Lincoln column in my '47 came back from the platers. Youngest son flew back after working a year in London and is now packing up the stuff he has at my house along with his storage locker for a move to CA. More distraction.

Had to pick up some furniture in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Used a trailer from my buddy behind the C10. Had to stop for an open bridge, so I shut the engine down with the lights still on, obviously for safety reasons. After 5 minutes, the bridge was opened for road traffic again, but my C10 would not start. Not a slow rattle, not even a click. Lights were still on. After some simple checks (shifter neutral switch, etc.), I called the Wegenwacht (AAA service her in the Netherlands) to give me a hand. After all, we were stranded in the middle of the road, with a lot of traffic passing by.

Wegenwacht came after 20 minutes and got the starter going with his powerful booster.
Apparently, I have an underrated battery installed for all the electric stuff: 2 radiator fans, heater fan, lights on the car, lights on the trailer, etc.

Sorry for the potato quality of the pictures.

  24. How many amps is the alternator rated at?

Don't know exactly, but we were measuring more than 40 amps after the engine was started. And it is a fairly new one.

so you probably have a 42 amp alternator, the heater fan alone can draw 20 amps, headlights draw 5 amps each and an 1157 bulb is just under an amp each. Your electric radiator fans probably pushed the draw past the alternators output and started draining the battery. Sounds to me like you need a larger amp alternator

Concur, be aware that the stock C10 wiring and ammeter is not sized to handle this increased current. There are several ways to to fix this problem.

I am a retired electrical engineer and a hack amateur mechanic - The simplest fix is usually the best fix. Run a heavier gauge wire straight from the output of the alternator to the positive (+) side of the battery (in most cases, this is the positive (+) terminal of the starter solenoid). Technically, this wire is in parallel with the ammeter wiring that is measuring the charging current - and carries a major part of the charging current (a second path to the battery, sharing the charging current).

I see some possible issues - your C10 alternator possibly uses the older external regulator (box on the firewall or fender). The newer Delco 10si and 12si alternators should be a direct bolt in, but have internal regulator. This will require some wiring changes at the alternator.

I very occasionally do an upgrade alternator installation, I use this web site for technical information:

    Thanks for the replies.
A bit of extra info: the car is from 66, but the electrical installation (battery, alternator, wiring harness, heater, fans, etc) is all post 2017. So basically, we are dealing with a new car.
But I do agree, the alternator might be underrated.
I will try to measure the electrical demand from the lights and fans, both heater (Vintage Air) and radiator (aftermarket, no visible tags).

IMG_20201115_120451.jpg IMG_20201115_114312.jpg Shot a little paint on the merc motor, put some new brakes on the F1 and figured out why the 81a I picked up a couple of weeks ago wouldn't turn over all the way.
Someone had installed a piston into one cylinder, put the cap on the rod but didn't connect it to the crank.
The rod journal won't fit in the bore of a 221 cu in motor with cap on it so the crank would hit it and stop.
No real damage done and it looks to be a good block, crank etc so I might have to find yet another project.....
