Hot Rods Chassis Engineering's - Forged Axles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Oct 30, 2020.

  1. Since the demise of Chassis Engineering and Heidts and Alston have jointly taken over they seem to have dropped (excuse the pun) axles from their inventory.

Does anyone offer a Forged Dropped axle like Chassis Engineering has in the past? HRP

P&J's bought the CE forging dies, rebuilt them and are now producing their version of the forged CE axle. Makes them in both the 2 and 2.25 perch width.

There’s still the old fashioned way. Lotta Henry axles out there. Many drop them.

  7. Yeah, all my axles are forged.....stock or dropped :).

  8. The heavy '32 axles are few and far between and naturally command a premium price, then having it dropped and you realize a quality aftermarket forged axle is a good alternative to the original heavy axle and a safer axle than the cast unit's. HRP

Doesn't SO-CAL still offer their forged dropped axle? They still have stores that are open.

  14. Johnson’s Rod Shop. Gadsden Al.
5 inch drop on the one pictured.
A 32 heavy axle was used to generate the CNC program.
A customer wanted a 5 inch dropped axle but didn’t want to use a tube axle.
I think it may be available in a 4 inch drop.

  15. I bought a SuperBell aluminum axle when we lost control in the rail and the car hit a guardrail, it had a tube axle that got bent and at the goodguys show no one had brought anything except the aluminum light weight axle.

I was amazed at how light it was, but one day we were stand in front of my roadster and one of my friends just causally kicked the tire and I saw the axle actually flex between the spring perch and the spindle.

the harder you kicked the tire the move it shook, I got paranoid and didn't drive the car too much after that happened, I eventually sold the car. HRP

  16. The first CNCd axle I seen was machined from billet aluminum.
It did flex and seem to have to much camber.
I’m sure the camber issue could have been machined or changed in the programming.
Alloy and car weight issues would needed to be worked out.
Wonder if any of the smart engineering guys here have any thoughts on an aluminum axle.

That’s a heavy piece to load in a CNC.

    Crazy expensive stuff.
    Glad I built my own.
    In the raw beginning

    Thanks
    :) You know you’re right.
If I had to pay myself wages for the hours I put into them I couldn’t afford them.:D
The chrome bill was hefty too.
So yes not purchased with MasterCard but still not cheap by any means.
    Very satisfying though

Johnson's catalog doesn't show axles-maybe they're custom ordered? The dog bone radius rods are $1296 polished.

The picture of the axles is from their Facebook page.
They won’t mention the price unless you send them a private message.

Yes they do, I used one and drilled it myself.
I used my mag based drill and a 1 1/8” annular hole cutter.

I think it’s a fine looking axle. Works great on my RPU.

I hadn't paid much attention to the ends until I was looking at a photo I took the day my SoCal axle came on the brown truck. They do have their own look but the axle is seriously beefy.

I got this one several years ago when a dealer put it up on Ebay for a real friendly price because it was showing the signs from being drug from show to show as a display axle. Nothing that regular prep and prime or prep and powder coat won't take care of though

The second shot is a drilled and chromed SoCal axle under someone's 32 that I had saved off the net. .
