They had both. In the 70s, the 4-lug pattern went from 4-on-4-1/2", to 4-on-4-1/4".

If the rims were something that I could use then I would replace the screws with stainless screws. Spin the screws in a drill to polish the heads with a very fine sandpaper. Remove the screws, slight countersink on the inside of the holes, thread locker, insert new screws, cut just above flush on the inside, peen the screws into the countersink, and grind or file smooth. That will maintain the look and celebrate the screws. Could even add a few more to look more aggressive.

When we started using drag tire on sprint cars, I went through first inner liners, then tubes and screws and finally bead locks. It isn't easy to get a screw started in a tire bead.

Some racers didn’t have your respect for Halibrands. I’ve had several Halibrand and American magnesium rears that were drilled and I had to weld them up.

Those JC Penney slicks actually worked pretty well. I ran an MGB with a 327/TH400 and a Chevy rear end in the brackets at Lions in the early’70s with JCP slicks on American 200s wheels. With a little VHT spray-on traction compound I could leave at idle with very little if any wheel spin.

Anybody know who made the slicks for Penny’s?

  8. Bringing this to the top with a question...
What would be a cool front tire to go with the slicks?

I had a Foremost refrigerator once... slicks were inside:). Michelin X would be a good front if you were not worried about weight.

    The sidewalls look like M&Hs.

  15. I used to run Volkswagon tires on the front of a light car. They were like a 5.10x15 to a 6.00x15.

    For a car running radials they are around a P195 70 15.

My go to tires when I was a kid for the '50s '60s cars that I usually drove were 9.00x15 rears and 6.00 to 6.50 14s or 15s (14s were coolest) on the front. If I had a heavy car I preferred a 7.00 on the front.

  16. So after trying to install these in my econobox,I discovered that the fronts are 4.75 and the rears are 4.5..
Car must've been running a diff axle...
