Ok, I am considering switching out the man a fre on my corvette and have several different options. An L79 intake, a C4B Edelbrock, A Weiand WCV 327 2x4 and a 2x4 Crietz, the Crietz seems to be the lowest profile of all of them and there are clearance issues on early vettes. I have a pair of 625 cfm Afbs and wonder how that would be on the street. The Crietz is pretty wide open inside with just a couple of small dividers. There isn’t anything wrong with the man a fre but I just want to try something different.
The Creitz always looked to me like it was designed to be a universal, fits ‘em all. I’ve seen 2x4, 3x2 and blower manifolds all from the same casting and I wondered about the performance of the carbureted manifolds with the huge plenum and no individual runners. My choice would hands down be the C4B, but I don’t know if it would fit. Maybe a ‘62 air cleaner would help.
Open plenum manifolds work better at high rpm. I can tell you that the afb's are too large for driving on the street. If you disabled the secondaries, that might work well. You will loose a little torque at lower rpm with an open plenum, also.
Mark, had the same engine combo in my ‘64 Vette Coupe. 3.70 gears, close ratio Muncie with a Z-28 intake, but had to run a small diameter air cleaner. Low end suffered a bit, but at 3 grand........Fun!
I have ran that exact manifold on my vette years ago,,,still have the manifold,,I used the 625 afb also,,my motor was 337 CI with 4 speed,, A lot of carb for the street as mentioned ,but you can make them work with some good tuning,,,I don't think you have enough motor to really notice a big diff in the low end torque..JMO
Not exactly OT, but I have a Creitz 3x2. It performed ok, but there are better 3x2 manifolds out there. I would imagine the same is true of the 2x4. If you're going mainly for looks, one will look pretty much like another to most folks. How it performs and what you want it to do are something else altogether. FWIW, I don't think you can beat the Man-A-Fre for looks.
Had one on the 283 in my avatar for awhile - also had 625s with early tops to run the small dia stacks - wish I still had the setup - sold manifold and carbs ended up on a friends pontiac - switched to a single 4 to run e85 Altered4 by ididntdoit1960 posted Nov 23, 2015 at 9:35 PM
Can't hurt to try it. I'd dig up a couple of 3721 300 hp/327 Carters or at least a pair of 500 cfm Carter/Edelbrocks though.
If you found a couple of 400 cfm it would be more drivable on the street. A friend had an open dual quad on another GM engine and I ran and worked really well as direct linkage. It looks great and may perform similar to the Man-a-fre. I would keep it if your not pleased with it.
To me the dual 4's look more appropriate under any pre '63 Vette hood. I even like them better than the FI look. Buy another hood, cut a hole in it, shave the Creitz for a blower and than you don't have to worry about hood clearances! Anything is possible, I gave up looking for a Creitz tripower and made my own, here's a dual 4 Creitz I modified for try power. Probably to tall for a Vette but could be shaved down a bit.
Wish I had kept mine. Sold it on here a few years ago. I think it may have been @brigrat above that bought it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ That's the one Jason^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The hole thing looks a little to sanitary after I finished it, think I will ruff up the plate below carbs and the shiny carb spacers to make it look more traditional.
While I've ever run one, or even seen one in real life, cept for the photos above... A bit of a wall hanger. No air/fuel directional control...anywhere. Well, there is a little bit of a center divider, but even it's not full length. There IS...a reason no one makes or runs a manifold like that today..! Not really even a good blower manifold start with no directional control at the runner-cyl. head interface. Mike
Have you considered a gM dual quad intake? It would fit the hood. I just happen know know where a “less than perfect” one is. Prime for polishing!
there is one thing that kinda makes me want to try it. The Horne 4x2 on the Caddy engine in my 40 is completely wide open inside and that car runs beautifully. Maybe it is a completely different thing? I just think I may try it and see, It is only gaskets and time if it doesn't work out....
My post was strictly an opinion, I have no experience with a Creitz, so if you are willing to give it a try I say go for it!
For some reason Moriaity sold me a set of BBC V/C's, probably the only thing he ever got rid of in his life! To autograph them was extra!
Ok thanks for the reply. I turned a friend onto one for sale locally for a car he’s building as it looks like a pretty complete and neat piece!
A well tuned man a fre has such a great response that I feel like you’d immediately know weather swapping the the 2x4 was a good idea or not
