I would like to run a 39 flathead and toploader transmission in.my roadster with a 9 inch rear that is in it. Is there an adapter, or yoke kit that slips on to the toploader transmission in order to run an open driveshaft? thank you

  2. That transmission was used in Ford trucks until around 1950 or 1951. The last version of it that was used from 1946 on was open drive. You just need to find one from that era. You can also swap the tailshaft and rear mount from one of those transmissions to an earlier torque tube drive model if you already have a good early trans and want to use it with the open drive feature.

The pickup truck 3 speed light duty transmissions were open drive from 1942-52. They were also available as side loaders (for the optional column shift) from 1950-52 but otherwise were all top loader floor shift through 1952.
The 1951-52 versions had the newer gear sets which had a more rugged first gear design. So those would be the preference for the hotter engines.
All versions used the same 1310 series slip yoke but it was a shorter version because of the short rear mount on these transmissions. You’ll have to have a driveline shop make up a driveshaft to mate up to your rear end.

  4. The Truck shown in your avitar in stock form would have had that unit in it.

So, to get this straight. Find a tail section from a 42-52 F1 pickup and swap it on to my good 39 sedan transmission?

The rear retainer/rear support is the same from 42-52 on the half ton pickups. However, you need the open drive mainshaft that matches your existing 1939 gearset. That’s assuming that your 39 trans has the late style synchro gear set. If it has the earlier synchro then nothing can be added to make this open drive. You need to know what is in there.

  8. As Mac pointed out things aren't exact across the board. You need to know exactly what you have to start with. The statement "39 gear box" is kind of a broad cover one. Most often it just means a Shift handle out the Top cover. Your best money spent if you don't actually have something to start with is the Last generation F-1 V-8 total unit. Also if you plan to do the work yourself get the book Mac prints about them. It's a priceless collection of info.

Need open drive mainshaft, and rear mount for open drive..to replace the main shaft you have to tear the trans down..I mess with 78 case dual shift detent late top loaders :)...oops,didn't see his post, listen to Mr Van Pelt,he wrote the book, 20201004_140615.jpg
