Not to be overly negative here....for those in Central / So Central Ohio Springfield OH swap meet at Clark County Fairgrounds is a go for this weekend (Sept 4th-6th) I'll be set up inside the vendor building. Certainly not a substitute for Hershey but right now I'll take what I can get

  2. Pate Swap Meet at Texas Motor Speedway has been cancelled. Next meet will be in April 2021 on the regular weekend.

For those in the New England area, the annual “Gathering of the Faithful” in Middleboro Mass. has been cancelled.
This would have marked the 20th Anniversary of this event.

Jack Wegman had no choice due to the current restrictions on
    crowds having fun.

Thanks, Jack for all your hard work! See ya next year! IMG_0246.JPG

    Hello,

Ever since we were little and happily settled in our new larger Westside of Long Beach house, our dad took us everywhere in one of his big Buick sedans. The closest place was the neighborhood liquor store where he bought his weekly newspaper. (and where we got our share of reading all of the Hot Rod/Rod & Custom and other magazines) But the first year we were in our last Long Beach home (sold it in 1998) Our dad surprised the whole family in driving a short distance over the freeway and LA River to see the newest Christmas lights display on nearby Daisy Avenue.
    upload_2020-10-24_4-30-39.png
Daisy Avenue is one of the most unusual streets on that side of the LA River. It is a single lane road on both sides of a wide median that had a ton of real Christmas Pine Trees down the middle. The two biggest Christmas displays at the time were the Alamitos Bay Floating Christmas trees and the LB downtown Pine Avenue overhead light displays. Both could be seen from the comforts of the nice warm Buick sedans. So, the comfort of wearing PJs had a two-fold result for our parents. One we had a nice family outing to see the displays and since we were in our PJs, as soon as we got home, we went right to bed.

Parents alone without two little kids… what a concept.

Jump up to our high school driving days and the Daisy Avenue lane of Christmas trees/decorations was a must see and do event for all teenagers. (Especially for a date night.) It was a line-up of hot Chevy sedans and other hot rods cruising nightly and double on the weekends. It was a must do thing for all of us. For the three years in high school, no one got tired of going to see the blocks long row (1 mile long) of Christmas trees all lit up and other decorations.
    upload_2020-10-24_4-31-6.png
Even when we got out of high school, a friend lived on the upper area of Daisy Avenue and he was getting tired of all the cars coming by his house to get to the main decorations. He and his sister were cool teens, but the flow of cars, including our own hot rods and cruisers was getting to him. Bah... Humbug!

Now, as sad as all announcements for cancelling anything for the pandemic, 2020 will not have the traditional, Daisy Avenue official Christmas lights display/parade. The trees will be there, but the annual parade event will not happen this year. My friend would have been happy, but he moved away a long time ago.

    NOTE:

“The 67th Daisy Avenue Christmas Tree Lane Parade in Long Beach’s Wrigley neighborhood has been officially canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Council District 7 newsletter.”

“The parade has been running since 1953 when Gertrude Whittle persuaded the City Council and churches to help decorate the grass median on Daisy Avenue between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street for the holiday, according to the city’s website. In the past few years, the parade has drawn thousands of spectators and participants including families, businesses and city staff.”

    Hello,

Since most communities have officially CANCELLED the normal trick or treat activities, those places that have the non traditional drive-through Halloween experience seems to be a way to cope with this pandemic. Safety within the confines of your own family hot rod or station wagon.

    1959 Bob Brooks Lions

A hot rod/drag race inspiration comes from Bob Brooks’ Competition Coupe from the Long Beach area. It was Reath Automotive sponsored and ran at Lion’s Dragstrip almost weekly. The above is my Halloween interpretation of what the Competition Coupe should look like on that walkabout tonight… for those hard core trick or treaters.

    Jnaki

My interpretation is one fast pumpkin. It would scare any mother walking her kids in any neighborhood. If there is a neighborhood walkabout…

    Thanks, Bob…

Stay safe and wear a mask… on Halloween, that is a good one!

The 2021 Pasadena Rose Parade will be replaced with 2-hour TV special on New Year’s Day

    Hello,

Last year in 2019, hot rods took front and center in the 131st version of the annual Pasadena Rose Parade. It was world-wide, with an audience over 1 million plus. The hot rods were larger than life and were in living color, on the TV screens everywhere. @cyclone kevin is to be congratulated for also being front and center to preserve a way of life of cruising Harvey’s Broiler only teenagers in So Cal 1960s were able to enjoy.
    upload_2020-11-17_4-16-33.png

But, as sad as the name change, the 132nd annual Pasadena Rose Parade was cancelled for 2021. A 132 YEAR HISTORY CANCELLED !!!

    Jnaki

So, the tradition of some kind of Rose Parade history will be available for all to see on New Year’s Day.

“The Pasadena Tournament of Roses on Thursday announced “The Rose Parade’s New Year Celebration presented by Honda,” which will feature live-to-tape musical and marching band performances, celebrity appearances, highlights from past Rose Bowl football games, floats from years past and a behind-the-scenes look into how the floats were made.

The TV special will air on KTLA at 8 a.m. Jan. 1, 2021.

The event on Colorado Boulevard draws thousands each year to the streets of Pasadena and organizers ultimately opted to scrap the parade due to COVID-19 restrictions.”

Gone are the cold camp outs along the streets on New Year’s Eve… gone are the numerous custom motorcycles cruising up and down the boulevard. Add in the many hot rods and cruisers made the New Year’s Eve night time show, a place to be, despite the consistent freezing weather.

Hopefully there will be a Rose Parade in 2022…

So disappointed; I love that show! The Goodguys held in Arizona a week ago was really sparse.

    Hello,

With the definite strict policy to help curb this pandemic, California has started the more severe cancellations and lock down procedures. The stay at home procedures are the most strict of any given to the whole state. This has to slow down the spread.

The weekly Cars and Coffee event at the San Clemente Outlet Center has grown to be the largest one in the area. They have complied off and on over the pandemic year. So, it is no surprise that since they are on borrowed time during friendly associations with the outlet management, they have decided to shut down the weekly car show FOR NOW.

    Jnaki

That is a commendable move by the Cars and Coffee management and kudos to you for doing that. Stopping the spread is going to happen, it just takes cooperation from everyone. They are requesting that NO ONE show up and stage any kind of gathering of cars on the property. It would be nice to have the weekly show, but once the pandemic is over, then it is one of the best on the Westcoast and especially in So Cal.
