My Boling Brothers frame for 38 pickup is on the way and I am building up my Explorer 5.0 (302) V8. It has GT40P heads with spark plug that points straight out. There are lots of SBF block hugger headers out there but not sure which will work with GP40P heads.

Anyone using block hugger headers with Ford GT40P heads?

    Thanks

"p-heads" are a real problem when it comes to "non-custom made" headers. Only one company makes headers for p-heads (AFAIK) and they're NOT huggers.
Might need to break out the old welder and BFH!

I have GT-40P heads with the Summit brand shorties. They are close, but work.

Ford Performance Parts catalog use to have them. They were made by Patriot. The part # at the time was M-9430-V302

I had ebay fox body mustang cheapos, i had a couple close plugs, but no problems

  6. I used the Summit brand also. Unless something has changed, they are Pertronix in private label. I had a set of bare that I sold and a set that were hpc coated. They both fit and did what they were supposed to de.

Use 289 HiPo manifolds - they clear with VERY little grinding in a couple of places - shortie style headers make no more power than the HiPo manifolds - the manifolds are available repro and are not that pricey

    What starter did you use?

I have smaller later model Ford mini starter.

I called Patriot and H8427 Tight Tuck Headers will fit GT-40p heads and a T5 five speed manual. According to Patriot, 157 tooth flywheel use Pertronix Starter # S3003P/B or Ford Racing Mini Starter #M-11000-B51 for 167 tooth flywheel use PerTronix Starter #S3004P/B or Ford Racing Mini Starter #M-11000-MT164.

Since I have T5, I will have 157 tooth flywheel and will need Ford Racing Mini Starter #M-11000-B51.

Anyone know if M-11000-B51 starter same size as 94-95 5.0 mini starter but just has more power?

In my 64 Falcon, I have Explorer 5.0 with T5 and I am pretty sure I used Explorer starter. Not sure how different the Explorer Starter is compared to the M-11000-B51.

  12. I'm using the starter from DB electrical in Tennessee. The offset of the seilenoid is the main difference in all those starters. The new ones are permanent magnet and require a small wiring change on some applications.

I found that M-11000-B51 starter is same as 94-95 5.0 mini starter. Will get the Patriot Tight Tuck Headers H8427 $185 pair at Summit.

What about the stock manifolds that come with the heads? They're kind of cool looking castings, but I have no idea if they will give you the clearance you want:

That's what I had to use on my car to get steering box clearance. They also made a tubular header style one on later models. With regular angle plug heads, a couple of the plug boots are real close to touching.

The tubular stainless ones seem to crack often, and have a lot of heat shield crap over them (that could probably be removed).

  19. Holy Toledo! I thought that was some goofy photoshopped picture of that manifold. Then I looked it up on The Rock! That’s a real Ford part! That has to be the weirdest looking manifolds I have ever seen.

I really like that wacky exhaust manifold, it looks like a weird early piece.

I had two sets of these and threw them in trash. It would kind of look out of place in my 38. Will be getting some Patriot headers.

Too bad, I am curious if they would fit a 351W in a Fairlane / Falcon with the intruding shock towers.
The shock towers are closest at no. 2 cylinder, so ordinary manifolds and headers interfere.

They might, but I think they would interfere with the stock steering box.

IF you are running a T-5 (UR) like me The Patriot headers are NOT even close to working around the Z-bar. Unless you-beat-the-$hit out of them to make the Z-bar work!! I don't think Patriot even half-a$$ tried to make'em work.
Very disappointed. Passenger side was fine.
I made special tools to get the spark plugs to go into the driver side.

I am not bothering with z bar contraption. I am using Hydraulic Clutch setup with Toyota Tundra Master Cylinder and BMW Slave cylinder in my 64 Falcon with 5.0 and T5. Cost me less than $50 and works great. I will have same setup on my 38.
