I've got a good dropped model A axle, 2-1/4 boss and a good 36 wishbone, made for 2" boss. What is the best way to make these two fit together? I've cut the spring in front mounts off already and there seems to be a lot of meat left on the upper, spring perch side of the bone. Plenty to take a 1/4" out.
I don't have a mill so this is going to be done with a band saw or a grinder, or both. The reason I was going to cut the bones is because the axle is worth more. But y'all are right, the axle would be easier.
Weld the end of the Model A wishbone on the end of the 36 wishbone and adjust you caster at the same time.
Cut it all off the top part as this is only thicker because of the canter lever for the spring mount, this will let the perch bolt have more of the shaft in contact with the axle and make sure the perch bolts are not loose in the axle. JW
Thanks to all who replied, I took the bones to a friend that has a mill. I hate to ask for help like that but I was afraid I wouldn't be happy with the results if I did it.
I tossed my bones in the mill, took off 1/16th off the bottom, and 3/16th off the top. It took longer to set up than to do it.
Get the right wishbone and be done with it is the easiest way. You can get yolks for the A and swap them out or you can mill the axle. But unless I was married to the '36 wishbone i would just find the right one and run with it.
Wouldn't going to a 37-40 wishbone be easier? I've used them on several customer chassis with no problems.
I think this is largely about using what ya got, making it work and learning something instead of too hard why try. JW
Open up the wishbones, I made my '35/'36 wishbone outside smaller to fit a lower shock mount (and a AA perch bolt).
