These are 3 that did it for me. Doane Spencer's, Frank Mack's, and Fred Steele's. Which I pumped gas into at the age of 12!

Rich Guasco's roadster was nice also. The story is that he stole a low miles 283 out of a newer Chevy at his dads wrecking yard to replace the flathead.

    Hello,

The most iconic roadster for us was the bright orange modified Speed Sport Roadster II. It was the epitome of the small roadster that was able to compete with the top eliminator FED race cars. "Red" Greth, Lyle Fisher and Don Maynard were the mainstays of the team. My brother and I traveled over two hours one way to get to Riverside Raceway on surface streets to see the West Coast appearance of the bright orange roadster on a cold, December 1959 morning.

Then several months later, in March of 1960, we were totally impressed again with the power and sound of the roadster at the Bakersfield Smokers 2nd March Meet. The one way trip was over 2 hours, also. It was a long road trip, but the results were well worth it.

The sound from the exhaust pipes created a tone that no one will forget at both the open area of the Bakersfield Smokers Dragstrip. Especially, when the Speed Sport Roadster went whizzing by where I was standing, taking movies on the cliff side of the Riverside Raceway course. It was magnified to no end. It was impressive and amazing.

  8. Phil Cool's orange 1978 AMBR-winning highboy.
It reminded us what a REAL hot rod was during a time of custom vans, kit cars and Buick V6's.

  16. This style pretty much did it for me. Still does. Single seat, center steer and a track nose. If it gets any better b39c16f3c1230f08f797de116cafca4b.jpg

than this, I never found it.

  17. Agree...nice posts.....can I add my uncle's pre Korea roadster pic - it's on it's way to Bonneville for 1950. And after Korea about 1955 with full 1932 fenders and the Olds power - the year before it was in the Hot Rod Annual for 1956 - along with his Bonneville 1954/55 Model T lakester running a GMC - this shot at my grandpa's shop where it was originally built in 1949/50. roadster behind leroy to bville.jpg roadster 1956 in front of shop.jpg

  18. The first Sacramento show 1950 - Dick Bertolucci made the belly pan but I think the story is he couldn't run it in the roadster class at Bonneville...... the # 5 entry full pic.jpg

When crusing with the LAR club back then, every time we went thru a tunnel, I would tease Tom & tell him his roadster sounded like a "Cement Mixer!!----WOW it was so loud!! Tom McMullen's new '32 roadster with Mosher engine 1976.jpg
