Hello everybody, I'm really excited to be here. I have recently acquired a 1950 Merc which I plan to customize. Not a lot of experience but a strong will to succeed and I'm good with my hands...

I'm not big on four doors. I do like Mercs and Lincoln four doors of this vintage, love the suicide doors. My wife's grandpa had a 51 four door that her dad beat the devil out of:) he told me one day "I was kinda hard on things":)
The neighbors father in law told me that he had one and had to about give it away 10 years ago. I wish I had known about it, I'd probably own it now.

Only if the Wooden Chicken and Portland Transmission shows are back on. Maybe the Roadster show too.

Wow fellas, thanks for all the replies! I'm blown away and feeling a little overwhelmed. Is anybody interested in hearing my intentions with this beauty or should I save that for my build thread??

I think I've told this funny little tidbit before.
Many years ago a friend of mine bought a 50(ish) Mercury four door in SoCal, I think it was just north of San Diego.
He flat towed it all the way back to Portland, he had a bit of a dry sense of humor and to add a little color to the trip he fastened a sign to the side of the car.
It read "got this for my wife, pretty good trade huh!

Thanks, Ok my #1 purpose for purchasing this car is to create a genuine Led Sled. So, I intend to chop the top and lower the suspension. I have no experience in this so I have been ravenously reading build threads on the subject and watching youtube videos. Further, I have attempted to track down a DVD of Tom Steadman's instructional video. Hard to find, the only place I can find them is Kustom Car Parts.com but they are shut down because of Covid and I can't get through via email or phone. If anybody has a copy and willing to sell it to me please speak up.

Powertrain: It has what I believe is the original Flat head V8 and 3 spd standard tranny which I want to keep. I'm thinking I should probably pull this out and rebuild. Looks like crap. I'll post photos soon.

I'm thinking I should remove the body from the chassis and completely go through and repair all rust possibly powder coat the chassis and repaint the body, not OEM. I would like to refurbish and use the original equipment rather than parts from other cars, however, I would like to install disc brakes.

Finally, the interior has to go, it smell like an old cheese factory.

  29. That old foam rubber used in the seats contains every Oder it ever caught. That can be some pretty Nasty stuff. I understand wanting to make everything good as new. My Personal advice from doing 40 plus years of Rust repair and Chassis work is to do as much as you can while it's as much a complete Car as possible. Some times I wish I had never taken the Flat Motor out Of my 50 but having a Hemi in it may erase that thought once done.
