This looks like the engine in a 1945 Segrave fire truck used by the Muscoy Fire Protection District El Rancho Verdi sub station(San Bernardino Ca) in the mid 1960's. The trans still has the PTO for the pump drive. The Dual ignition was mandatory then by NFBU guide lines.
I was an engineer at Muscoy from 1965 - 1967.
The Segrave and American La France fire trucks used 12 cylinder engines from Auburn and I think Dusenburgs after those cars went by the way in the late 30's. This will give you an idea of the power those cars had. In the local area( NW Oregon) the old Segraves from the 40's and 50's were used in competition because of their speed.
That truck was military surplus bought from the North Island Naval station in San Diego

Luckily you escaped to Oregon. You wouldn't want to be an engineer in San Bernadino/Muscoy now.

I just looked at the speedometer and it shows 80 plus thousand miles! Wow! Most fire engines back in the day never reached that kind of miles, around here anyways! Maybe in big cities, like New York. Do you know where this truck came from? Forgive me if you have already mentioned it, 25 pages is too much to review! Lol

    Hi Bones!
The speedometer comes from a 1935 Dodge

I went thru the first 2 years of civil disobedience 1965 & 1966. The Muscoy district was hit the week after WATTS. In June of 1967 I was in the US Navy. In July 29th of 1967 San Brenardino Mayor Al Ballard issued riot guns to all his dept. First ever in the history of USA. Going back to Ben Franklin
Muscoy was called the last of the wild west then. We rolled on murders often. We had no EMT/ Paramedic training just first aid. How I envy the depth they have now. My niece has been an EMT for 20+ years in the SB basin area. Plus being an instructor. Egad she's tough.
Three stiffs on one call. So sad, a mother and the two children. The thing I hated most was being shot at and physically assaulted in processing a fire.
After the first week of riots in Watts in Aug of 1965 we were under orders to respond to all calls no lights and no serene. Well ,one night we are on roll around 3:00am. This is a Crown Coach with a twin cam 6oo cid. Hall Scott engine 4" exhaust pipe. Unloaded it was 12 ton and would do 60 mph in the 1/4 mile. what a rod.
Well as we drive off the ramp the 4' muffler blows off. Still had to respond to the call in the Riot prone neighborhood the call came from. So, here we go a 15 ton Hot Rod with crash box (non syncro 4 speed trans) double clutching every up and down shift. Roar ,Belch all the way. Mel Ferris was driving. We get to the address and the call was a false alarm.
If you never have felt a 160 pulse rate you don't know an adrenaline rush is.
Mel looked at me grinned and off we went for 20 min up and down every block in Muscoy. No one slept that night. Finally we came down and went 10-8 , 10-19.

Well, that's a great way to instill goodwill in San Bernardino – even if you can't spell it right.

This is an automotive forum. We're not much interested in what else you have to say, but we do insist that you get your automotive facts right. Just about everything automotive you posted is wrong. I know whereof I speak, having owned a 1948 Seagrave pumper with the Pierce-Arrow derived V12 for over 20 years. Your statement concerning "12 cylinder engines from Auburn and I think Duesenburgs" is also incorrect. At least give the marque the respect it deserves and spell it correctly.

Thank you for the correction. I am trying to remember a 50 year old event.
Another correction the Hall Scott engine was a single cam industrial engine not twin cam.

Anticipating seeing it tuned up, waxed up, warmed up...

    The engine weighs 1000lbs.
A Duesenberg Roadster weighs about 5000lbs
    I'm gonna guess 4000lbs
    2 tons
    1800kg

As a point of reference, I was able to see a touch over 70 mph om a long smooth stretch of highway with my '48 pumper with the 468 ci engine. I had just finished going through it and had new plugs and new properly set up points on both distributors on a truck with 2300 road miles (I don't remember what the engine hour meter read, as it was not operational when I got the truck).Conversely to what someone said above, the engine ran best when using both ignitions.

That truck weighed 14,000 lbs. Gui, hang on tight when you floor the throttle!

    Hi Tub!
In fact I’m a little worried about flooring the Leviatã.
First: the 1926 Buick external contracting brakes don’t are the ultimate regarding brake technology.
Second: I don’t now if the steering will shim.
Next November 20-22 I’ll attend a on track old car meet with it.
Will be a good opportunity to test the car without the risks of the public streets.

I agree! On all my twin ignition engines, and I dealt with several, they all ran better on “ both” ignitions. One way I would back yard check the ignition system was to run on “A” ignition and record the rpm at idle , then switch to “ B” ignition and see if it was the same. If both systems were right you would not see a difference in RPM. But in all cases when I switched to “ Both” I would see an increase in RPM at an idle. Just my experiences.

But top speed on all my engines was determined by the governor.
    My engines were Mack.

  29. That poster inspired me to do a bit of snooping online. So while we're waiting for the next update from Dr. Malacarne here's some Brazilian jalopy racing.

    Now, if I only spoke Portuguese . . . :(
