Damn....right when I thought that this was one place that you could go and just enjoy seeing and visiting with fellow modelers ,and not worry about the negativity that often interrupts the enjoyment of other threads. Like we haven't got enough crap to deal with in the world these days....thats the main reason I have got back into building models , not supposed to go any place so sitting and building a model is relaxing and keeps your mind in a good place. So anyways this is what I have been doing lately, buying vintage model kits on ebay . I bid on ones that have been opened , started and not finished, glue and paint bombs or parts. Then I do what I can do to assemble them, restore them or even leave as is. This first one is a original 1956 release, it was opened but not started, turns out it was mising a hood and a rear tire&wheel , I made up a tire&wheel still working on a hood. Another ebay purchase, This one definitely is a paint and glue bomb, the box is nice , originally it was built as a stocker? With duel side mounts and a convertible top down boot. The rear slicks were on the front and the original wire wheels on the rear, also the front axle is upside down. Was it a "gasser" or a stocker? Notice the center mounted steering wheel but then its got the stock original engine... I put the slicks on the rear , dug out something for the front and exchanged the top boot for a roll bar that was in the box. And I think thats the way its going to stay, the paint and glue job is so priceless. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
This is my latest ebay vintage model restoration project. This one only had a couple of pictures of it when I bid on it, even though it was started to be assembled, it didn't look to bad. Upon receiving it found a different story, major glue bomb, body cracked in 2 places, front axle broken off, front wheel mounting tabs broke off, rear axle wheel mount tab broke off, so now I have completely taken it apart and am making repairs , the body was covered with glue finger prints and the body halves were heavily globbed together. I have stripped it apart and repaired the body , started with 320 grit paper lightly sanding the body continued with down to 1200 grit then polished it ...then painted and reassembled the engine, then while reading the directions I discovered that you could assemble this dragster with a motor mount ,thats provided in the kit, and mount a rocket engine to the rear of it for running on a tether line. Wow...ya where am I going to find one of them....well ebay of course . And its going to be restored with the rocket engine option installed for display only....ya right...what kid would do that ? Well a kid I'm not..but curious I am. So when finished I will just have to try it out, directions says it will do 75mph on a string line, lets see...plastic model with a hot rocket engine firing off strapped to it...doing 75mph...I might as well just lite a $100 bill on fire and watch it burn...basically the same thing. No ...Im going to launch the car...I will try to get a video and post it. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
What fuel does the jet use?I thought you would just mount a metal holder for an Estes model rocket engine!
Here's the info on the engine, it came with only one fuel pellet and it says for a full boost use 2...so with just one hopefully it will survive and not melt down. You can also use a CO2 cartridge set up on it. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
'Little late to the party, what with it being Monday and all, but here's a work in progress. It's a scale model but it's 1:1 scale. It started as a joke (after pricing plastic mock up blocks online) with me saying I could build a cardboard mock up block and trans to lay out mounts on the frame. I have a shit ton of Amazon boxes. Why not? So, looked up the mechanical drawings for a SMC and It kinda spiraled from there and has turned into how I now recycle cardboard. Was originally very crude but now I'm working from the top down. Still have to dress the block up. Everything you see here is cardboard and cardstock.
It's salt sprinkled over the first layer of paint. The intake looks a little too coarse, so when I did the exhaust manifolds, I put the salt in the blender and gave it a few pulses. To get the valve covers smooth, I used Durham's Rock Hard Putty then sanded the shit out of em.
My latest build: Galaxie’s 1/25 ‘46-‘48 Chevrolet Aerosedan, a beautifully tooled and challenging to build kit. I airbrushed the exterior in period correct two-tone Como Blue and Dove Grey, base paints I ordered from Scalefinishes.com. My favorite part of this kit was the fabulous stovebolt straight six engine, probably the most realistic 1/25 scale auto engine I’ve seen. I found a sedan delivery version of this same kit on eBay and hope to build and post a late ‘40’s service vehicle of some kind here in the future. cheers, John
Looks great. I did that one too a few years back and the Galaxie brand has nice stuff. I also have the S/D but that may go towards the dark side(street rod) based on some pics I took at Springfield Nats of a beautiful burgandy car years back.
Got a bit of work done on the vintage dragster restoration/rebuild project. I ended up replacing the front and rear axles and tires and wheels, the original stuff was broken up, from a old black widow hot rod pu kit that I got off of ebay. Had to do some modifications to make it fit, including cutting out some of the driver's crotch to clear the quick change rear end housing, also reinforced the bottom of the chassis where it was broken and the nose structure for mounting the front axle. With all the extra work involved and the additional expense for parts added to the original amount paid for the model and the jetex rocket engine, I'm pushing a $135+ investment in this thing, actually investment really isn't the right word, probably more on the level of a form of stupidity, oh well you only live once...and my doctors just told me that it will be longer, because I'm now going on 2+ years cancer free...so what the hell. But I will possibly not be launching it like originally planed, if I don't launch it ,I will launch something else. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Rudestude, I read your previous post about picking up these beaters from ebay and wondered what the devil you must be paying for them. I tried doing the same thing but I was not going to go to debtor's prison for funding these purchases. I don't know who I find more laughable, the sellers or the bidders. I guess I have to choose the bidders. I'm not giving you a jab here, or anyone else that really wants these cars. It's your money, your time and the enjoyment you obviously get from working on these things apparently is worth it to you. I'll be watching with interest. Good luck.
Trust me ....this was not a normal thing for me, the spending of ridiculous amounts of money on such items...actually its the shipping costs that eat up the money. I haven't bought any new models in years because of how much they cost, but what got me going on this venture was a matter of first time on ebay, just loaded my money card with cash, purchasing items online ...a new thing for me, been spending alot of money....buying new parts for a hot rod build I'm doing that seems to be stalled for a moment, after selling abount 7 of my hot rods when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer, figured I was on my way out...I kept a couple...8 surgery's later and only 40% of one kidney remaining ...I'm beating it so far. So what the hell ...I spent money ...had some fun...got some stuff I really didn't need, I've got 100 or so unbuilt kits allready...just not ones that old, ...no regrets....oh ya... I'm single...that made it possible too do. I'm done with that trip now...so now I'm cleaning out junk from all 5 of the junk rooms, collectible storage rooms, have made 5 trips to the dump so far...back working on my 50 Studebaker champion starlight coupe hot rod build and building models on the side....all is good. Here's some shots of my shopping event...most of them... Most of them are ones that were started and not finished and the have all of there unused custom or hot rod parts included, the oldest ones have been opened and not assembled...as I work on them I will post. It was fun ...but back to my norm is ok too. And cancer free...for now is a good thing...I'm still pissed that I sold off my cars though. Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
