Interesting axle, can't quite get my head wrapped around it.

Looks like crudest possible turning mechanism... "straight" axle with center pivot. Sort of like 4 wheel trailers of old, but with a little caster added in for moving it at speed. Probably a very sketchy ride at speed.

    /2 cents from my armchair

  13. I believe the front axle is one of Chassis Research's " better " ideas.

Did you get a feature in Cool Cars, Square Rollbars ?? You were defying the norm as that was the time of mini-bikes, go-carts and musclecars.

  15. I see two modern - as in current - photos above.

In that case, what would be the purpose of the spindles having king pins and being connected with a tie rod? Also, the radius rod that shows on the right side of the axle appears to be clamped solidly with no provision for allowing the axle to swivel. I don't get it.
Circle track cars used to lead with the right front tire to help them turn left, but no more than an inch or so as I recall. With no suspension it wouldn't be very effective on a circle track and obviously it's not a circle track chassis.

We had this old bicycle laying around and thought.... Then the tech guy wouldn't let us run it. We had to weld it up and add regular steering.

The above screenshot is from a PDF that @54popular posted 7 years ago, it shows that the axle was in fact suspended and had conventional steering.

That's cool, I can't make out the suspension in that picture. Is it a single coil spring in the center?

It is an early Chassis Research axle suspended by a rubber biscuit inside the vertical tube. NHRA later banned it, insisting on a traditional transverse spring. I had one and had to convert it with a CAE front axle. This is Lloyd Scott's "Sleeprocker Special," which he built after moving to Washington from California. Scott built the original "Bustlebomb" twin engine dragster when in California.
