Mystery solved. Spoke with the original owner today (Joe Lassalette). Joe has known Don since his days of owning a B/G Willy's (mid 60's). Don had done a little work on Joes Willy's and Joe was involved with an anodizing company which did some work for Don. As it turns out Joe asked Don what it took to make a chassis. Joe had some tubing bent, tacked it together then gave it to Don to straighten and square before finish welding. Don also narrowed the olds rear end and mounted to the chassis along with the front spring perch. This makes me feel better knowing the FACTS of this frame. Talked to Gary Hansen this week about bending tube for me and Bill Gathing about a seat for this car. I'm excited. So as I find parts and start to add tubing will keep all informed. And special thanks to Pete Eastwood and DRE race cars for their interaction with Mr. Long.

 

it's great to know where your frame came from isn't? i have a fed and have wondered off and on about it myself. haven't looked very hard to find out though. mostly because i don't know where to start. it had one tube roll cage so it must be an early rail. the person i got it from was running a 440 dodge motor so it had the mounts so that's what i put in it too.

 

Gary, this is the place to start. This site goes far and wide with a wealth of knowledge and great contributors.

While helping Mikio unload his Stone T body, ask if I could share this photo of Mikios first race car. Home made chassis with a Hudson engine. Says it ran low 13's. Don't know who took the photo but this photo is Mikios.

 

If you want period correct tube bends for your car call H & L Metals in Signal Hill. They bent tubes for just about every chassis builder in So Cal back in the day. 562 426 7388.

Thanks Roo. Used to make all what was needed in my shop. But got rid of the shop almost three years ago, with most of my equipment. Didn't think I had another build in me, but when someone give you a challenge, you go for the gusto. I've know Gary Hansen for many year and he is local, will bend what I need. Now that I know what the chassis is, i've got many options as what to make. Just got to start putting things together and see how it morphs...LOL

Man what a cool thread...HAMB members don't disappoint!

Anyone recall seeing this car around? It was raced up and down the west coast from mid 60's through to early 90's. I have searched many old picture files and haven't yet spotted it in any...sure seen a lot of great stuff though.

intriguing. i bought an altered back in may. circa 1983, 125'', owner/driver bob la regina. planning on doing twin v6's in it.
what wheelbase would an altered be today?

 

they are limited by nhra to 125" maximum.

Steve Haight and Mike Sullivan built a twin Buick, TF dragster some years back. Not a good picture, but... Go down a couple of pictures.

They never got the car to work. They kept breaking the engine couplers. They designed and built the first one. Then they had some big shot build one, then they went to a "tractor puller" team and had them make one...broke it.
They put the engines straight up, number one firing order to number one firing order. Then they tried mixing the phasing. They musta gone through about 7 or 8 different coupler and engine connection combinations.
LOTSA money spent, with very little joy. They got the car to run sorta ok, but never live up to the plan.

Turns out, Buick engines V-6 on Nitro...don't like to be connected..!
The little read next to the picture is far from the whole story.

i found a pic of the twin v6 dragster about 5 yrs ago. didn't know whose it was. wonder what they did with the engines. i plan on running gas, not nitro. overall, i like challenges making things work.
