Seen at FAMOSO a few years back. The reader board has some of the history of the dragster.

Real runner back in the day the original has been posted on the HAMB several times but I forget who was the owner of this one. Dragmaster was the name of a famous frame maker and drag racing team and if you put dragmaster in a search of the HAMB several pages of threads come up covering the guys and several different dragsters.

    Hello,
This is a pretty comprehensive history of the race car from 1959 to its restoration in 2016.

But, for you die hards out there, the original Dragmaster from Carlsbad in So Cal looked like this and had an unusual sound for its day. Filmed at Lion's Dragstrip in the Summer of 1959. The original sound added from September 1959 at the Detroit U.S. Nationals, off of an LP album I purchased in 1959.

Also seen at FAMOSO a few years back. I really miss being able to go to the Hot Rod Reunion at FAMOSO.

    Hello,

Having grown up attending and racing at Lion’s Dragstrip from 1958-61, it has a ton of memories that continually bombard our old brain waves. It was a time for experimentation and the start for a couple of teenagers that knew we could build a cool street legal hot rod. The idea of being able to spend a few minutes driving to Lions, weekly for those elusive trophies and cool jackets, the camaraderie from the racers and other builders was just our ticket.

Who knew that almost 60 years later, the films we took back then would be a rare commodity as there are a few still around in digital format. In 2017, I was invited to participate in the original grand opening of the Price Transfer Automobilia Lion’s Dragstrip Museum. They wanted to showcase color action film from that 58-60 era for the people who would be touring the facility at some time. I was honored to see the films playing on a huge TV monitor on the wall of the museum for everyone to see and enjoy.

By being invited, I was able to be in the actual museum pre staging days with the early arrivals of drag racing cars. Of the three days I was there, one notable arrival stunned me back to 1959-60. The Howard Cam Twin SBC dragster. We had seen it in action, in the pits, and now in a historic rebuild of one version of the original.

The original museum was a huge hit with the So Cal enthusiasts. After the initial wave of attendance died down, the museum was closed for a rebuild and creating a new wing of the whole Price Transfer Automobilia Complex. The NEW 2019 preview days were full of new, nostalgic cars showcasing the different eras of Lions history from 1955-72.

But, without history, there is no modern day, nostalgia race cars.

    For everyone’s memory blanks:
    TWIN BEAR PITS SINGLE INJECTOR

Several months ago, in a discussion with Donny Johansen, I asked him about the single Hilborn Injection. He had seen the movie I took of the Twin Bear in the pits at Lions and racing against Lefty Mudersbach. He said that the diameter was a huge opening, but within a year, the size of the new twin injectors surpassed the diameter of the big single. So, the twin injector was more efficient. Thus, the popularity of the twin started on a lot of race cars.

Here is one of the most anticipated “twin versus twin” drag race of the 1960 era: Everyone was all a “gaga,” especially in the SBC camp.

IF and when the new Lion's Dragstrip Museum is reopened, the Howard Cam Twin may still be in the current display of the "Icons of the 1960 era."

    Hello,

The Bixby Knolls connection from high school still exists in Jerry Biven’s AA/FD, CHECKMATE.
    upload_2020-11-5_4-32-2.png
His drag racing history is well documented, with involvement with Lou Baney, Tom McEwen, and our friend, Doug Fisher. Doug Fisher (now gone) was from our junior high school on the Westside of Long Beach. He went to high school with all of us.

The team’s builds were always top notch. In the “Drag Cars In Motion” posts, there are plenty of photos of the early version of the “CHECKMATE” FED.

I finally caught up with Jerry Bivens in 2017, having not seen him since high school. We were at the original Lion’s Dragstrip Museum Grand Opening, afternoon Cacklefest. It was a great conversation and memory.

He is involved, as are plenty of other old So Cal drag racers. Steve Gibbs has created a monster following with the Nitro Nights and Nitro Revival programs. The whole program shows wonderful “nostalgia drag racing vehicles.”

Michael “Blackie” Gejeian, entered the Oakland Roadster Show in 1953 with this black, channeled 1926 Ford roadster. During the show he and his friends would physically tip the car on its side to show the chrome underside parts
