Projects Dodge This - 1939 Dodge Southeast Gasser Build

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Dog_Patch, Aug 12, 2014.

  1. Looks like one video a week. They already cut a lot of the race out I think, not sure they cover first round. A LOT of cars now.

50 acres ..... trust me we have talked about LOL

It's North Carolina about 3 miles from Quain's shop. I can't retire yet but when I do this is the last stop for me. 50x80 shop with a big lean-to for farm equipment. Looking into organic farming as an income generator. Just not seeing a bright future for living near a big city and hoping store shelves stay stocked.

Anyhow ol Gabe pulled off another win. They had Jon Kasse help on the engine and its about unstoppable now.

  9. Went to Lamar Waldon's and ran the car on the dyno. Have been meaning to do this for a long time. It was a good time and we found a bad MSD box and 20HP. It topped out at 716HP and 570 foot of torque. It picked up after enabling the high speed bypass. We tried the bypass at the track but the runs are so inconsistent at the track we couldn't tell if it was helping. Rob Waldon is a great tuner if anyone is local.

Sweet, I can't wait to get my panel running and down there to be tuned. Built the engine there 8 years ago, great people. Glad to see you found some more power. I'm curious what is the " high speed bypass"

Looking forward to watching you turning on a win light in Aiken.

  11. The high speed bypass lets more of the fuel go back to the tank at high RPM. They use them on Alky cars a lot but not that much on gas. Gene Adams flowed this one so it would open about 7000 rpm and start leaning the fuel curve out. The dyno showed that it helped the power numbers. I didn't get the A/F ratio chart printed but it shows the effect better than the HP curve. This printout shows the bad MSD box killing the power on the first 2 runs. The squiggly stuff in the beginning is the clutch counter weights locking down. Rob says the chassis dyno is also another way to see of the car is driving through the clutch.

Tony, you still have one of the classiest rides out there! Did you and your son get the C10 where you wanted it? Bet you’re missing the races, good to see Q ‘n D back!

  14. Thanks Tony! The way the world was going this spring, we didn't order any new shirts. I hope 2021 is better.

Tony what was going on in the MSD box? You don't often see them malfunction, or at least in my experience. Did have a coil go bad from overheating but box has been OK so far.

  16. The car has been backfiring during the burnout. I pulled the box today and it was set on 8000 for the rev limiter setting. My guess is the rev limiter was getting some corrosion on the pots maybe and the limiter was coming on early. The new box is working fine.

  17. Oh you mean Jack? Wooooo no kids here that I know of LOL he's the kid from the neighborhood, yeah he has it running good right now. He has replaced almost every bushing and brake etc on the truck. I'm impressed with his talent. I only need to help him once in a while now, he's getting good at the automotive stuff.

  20. Fun weekend and the weather was perfect. Finally ran fast enough to need to weigh. Yeah I’m 300 pounds heavy. Got to hang out with Jon Kaase. He came to watch Gabe run.

Cool. I've been told Kaase is an interesting guy to talk to. If you could lose the 300 lbs (easy to say - not so easy to do) would you be in the top qualifier range? 5.70s is no slouch.

  23. Well yes I do and they will make your hair turn gray .......

Yeah Kaase is a wealth of knowledge for sure. He fixed Gabe's issues by only changing the oil pan and possibly restrictors. Before Kaase worked on it they ran 7 races and popped 7 engines.
Gabe broke the track record with a 5.44 I think. I heard the Chick Magnet ran a 5.39 on Friday night but that was just testing and didn't back it up on Saturday. So even with 300 pounds lighter its only a maybe (?) We qualified 11 out of 14. That damn Chick Magnet has the hots for me or something - 3 races and 3 times I drew him first round.

Impressive. It wasn't all that long ago (time is a relative thing) that Outlaw 10.5 guys were running low 5's with a boatload of nitrous.
