Pack rats ate most of the firewall insulation a couple winters ago so I ripped the remainder out and wire wheeled out some rust and painted it. I did the same treatment under where the windshield collected some surface rust and cleaned out the cowl vent gutter. I am very lucky not to have rust through there.

You can really see how dark the Vineyard Green was under where it was protected behind the insulation. Cool color, most hunter green and dark green paint I have found contain more blue and less grey-brown hue.

Sounds good to me  I just need to get my move over and then back on the truck. Should be finalized by the end of August, then i will have some space to work :D

I had a 33-34 passenger steering column minus the mast jacket relayed to me by a great guy Josh Scott of Spokane a few years from the LA roadster show. I also had a scrounged 34 large truck mast jacket which turned out not to fit, but it donated it's 32 style column drop and clamp. The big 33-34 big trucks (maybe more) used a heavy wall tubing that doesn't fit a commercial steering box.

I also had an F1 mast jacket donated by another nice local rodder. It always pays to have longer steering columns handy to cut down to size. IMG_20200815_151818_023.jpg

I wanted to use the existing holes in the mast jacket for the steering lock so first order of business was to mock up the column drop and cut to bottom of the tube to length. IMG_20200815_155646_736.jpg

Since I'm using a big truck steering wheel off a 40s COE I had to make a heavy brass shim to fit the taper on the passenger steering column.

Also, this truck wheel works with a straight wall column, so the bell off the F1 mast jacket I cut off IMG_20200815_164728_868.jpg is set aside for my next project which will have a 40 deluxe wheel.

I didn't have the special sheer bolt for the column drop so I cut down a cap screw on my "lathe" IMG_20200815_161824_140.jpg

Cleaned all the old gunk from the 32 style ignition switch and lubed it with silicone (dielectric) grease. Reversed the terminal plate to give the other side a chance to have 86 years of wear. IMG_20200815_154844_661.jpg

I rebuilt the 34 steering box last wear with a new worm and sector.

TIP: place a 1" pipe or similar around to support the steering shaft while pressing worm gear on or it may bend and you will have a hell of a time straightening it (if you even can) IMG_20200815_201041_155.jpg

Anyways, the truck steers nice now. I put some NON hypoid gear lube in the box, put the steering wheel on (loose for now). And gave it a spin. Feels nice! Next time to direct attention to radiator and getting her running

Spent the end of summer working on some projects on the other side of the state, got a little side work at a machine/ welding shop and some training from real pros. Now back onto the '34

Mounted the radiator, found some nice fitting flex hoses at NAPA. After the first fitting of the radiator, I learned why the original factory photos 32 V8 radiators came down the line with hoses already installed (OOPs). Here is the 180 deg T stat that fit: IMG_20201010_115246036_HDR.jpg

Reversing the terminal plate on the column drop switch will not work. The contacts have a special spacing. I like your project!!

Thanks for the info, even though this one still looks functional I think I'll replace it with a nicer one then.

Same here! Years ago, when I didn't have access to a lathe, I would rig up my drill in a wood frame to make a crude lathe to do some simple turning projects on aluminum parts and round stock.

Thanks for the positive feedback everybody! I tried my hand at a couple of patches on the bed where it had rusted through on the side and somebody had torched out an extra hole for a gas fill. Maybe it was mounted on something other than a 33-34 pickup at some point. Trying to get this bed mounted soon to clear up the extra parking space! IMG_20201013_195833677.jpg

Doing it all with the gas torch for now, as IMG_20201013_195725440.jpg soon as I can swing it I'm planning on adding a TIG to the stable

The infidels cut through the inner frame of the bed also so I had to make a chunk of angle to weld in.

Just finished painting the dash but it's kind of plain, I think it could use some nice pinstripes. I'll see how it looks with gauges IMG_20201013_195929415_HDR.jpg

Unfortunately the throttle linkage for the slingshot didn't clear the 36 breather, but I had this road draft tube laying around that cleared. When it's daylight I'll show pics of the throttle linkage setup IMG_20201013_195944648.jpg

This is the 7" dual throttle linkage from S IMG_20201014_105035457_HDR.jpg peedway cut down for 4 3/4" spacing. Works pretty good with the original Ford parts and easy to adapt. Careful with cutting off the ends as one is #10-32 Left hand thread, sounds obvious but make sure to cut the right hand thread side

    Firewall insulation:
Packrats ate my original while I was neglecting the 34. (which was sad, because it was pretty nice)

I bought the $34 jute backing that Mac's sells and pinned it to some cardboard to keep it flat. Sprayed it down with a $15 can of FlexSeal. Cheap and easy, and approximates the look of the original which was a black tar paper felt looking board over something like acoustic ceiling tile board.

It snapped over the retainers nicely, the flex seal made the felt/jute kind of stretchy and scuff resistant

I got the 34 on the road just in time for the first few sunny days last week. I am super happy with the way she drives and plenty of power. While adjusting the brakes check the tie rods etc to make sure everything is tight after the first few miles. I found a tie rod nut I forgot to tighten and was missing a cutter pin! Always pays to double check.
Next I have to finish hammering out the rear fenders, installing the bumper, and wiring headlights.
I will refine the body work and paint down the road, I have a lot of driving and mods to do before i know what final form it will take. 20210321_195206.jpg 20210321_195214.jpg
