  1. Trent -

yep ... after I posted, I realized Donny had posted those same 3 pics on several LSR FB groups that you follow as well.

I saw the car (less body panels) in the Markley / Hoffman shop last year (while Craig was still building it) ... the chassis work is amazing ... dare I say sexy!

  5. We found a new/old small displacement mill. It is sorta OT for here but feel we have a great program with some good help from as far away as Austrailia

The off topic Honda K motors are called by some as the best 4 cylinder engine...ever! Just saying, as at Bonneville everything goes.

  15. We have a different OT path picked out. I will start doing updates but leave the motor outta the picture.

  20. Chassis was at roller stage when I shelved it. After the wedding last fall we have just been enjoying time together working on the house. Just started reorganizing the fab bay of the shop where this car is

  21. A LOT of folks agree with you Rich. I have made many comments about lakesters with doors and a decklid. That is why the asthetics of this car mean so much.

Damn, I'm glad I read though the whole thread (after looking to see who started it) and figured it wasn't a parking lot poser building his take it to Bonneville to pose at the casino roadster but a real race car.
The doodles in post 95 and 96 look interesting.
Other than that all I can say is pick the class you feel comfortable with running in and go for it. I'd have to thing that the guys who haven't seriously enjoyed racing at Bonneville are those who built a car that is in a class that has a record that is near impossible to match without huge buckets of cash put into being able to go fast. = showing up with a nice 150 mile car running in a class with a 260 mph record with other guys in the class actually looking to bump it

  25. If I had one I would! In fact, I looked and don't think I have anything you can use on yours. My panels above and below the decklid are swiss cheese as well. One reason we are going to make a racecar out of this body. This was a super rough body I got from Roy about 15 years ago before he moved to Az.

  26. Thanks! I don't think I have even set foot on the Nugget lot during Speedweek! I haven't even set foot in a casino there since my first trip to the Salt almost 20 years ago

We have the base engine and class. Actually two options on the same family of engines. That part is still OT even tho they have roots in the 60s. As it sits right now, speeds and records keep getting faster every year. I actually got down on this fact over Speedweek before I snapped out of it. For every Poteet you have teams like the Saltcat guys, the Dodge Boys, Shug Hanchard etc. setting records on a beer budget and "enginuity". Our two bullets can nab us huge horsepower numbers, we just need to make this 27 as smooth as possible. I see lots of cars in all classes that really have dirty aero and look like they could use some improvements. And that is what LSR is about, coming up with your take on how to make a certain combination go fast.

Thanks man! And shoot me a note the next time you guys pass thru the area. We can get together for some food and drink. Also FWIW, I never knew what your avatar was until my wife Lavin and I got together a couple years back. She is a lifelong Deadhead!

    You'd be wrong.

Do you think every golfer goes out each week to set the club record? Do people bowl when they can't strike every time? We've been successful at Bonneville and El Mirage (and unsuccessful). We built a car out of a street car that we'd had for 30+ years -- just to see how fast we could go. Each time we entered we wanted to do better that we had before, and often it did. We tried something different, something new. Some times it worked, some times it didn't.

But the biggest payoff was meeting other competitors from around the world Some famous, some not. But all great people that were there to do their best . . . and see their friends . . . and maybe get a trophy (not usually).

Send me your banking numbers and forward all my prize money I've won. I'll ask George Poteet to do the same -- he's a real nice guy.

  28. I will comment on both of these. Not everyone running slow in a fast class is doing it based on money or purpose. I know helping Tim over the years there was a ton of testing, licensing runs and experimenting on just how to make the thing run. I tell folks that their first year with little experince will be spent learning the ropes and licensing. There are many team that choose to license more driver at the same time, that is a lot of slower runs on the short courses. Once up to speed however there reaches a certain point that all you are doing is hot laps and need to make the next step forward.

In regards to @Stan Back s comments, he knows what he speaks. Even this year, look at the big names/fast cars that did not set records? 911, Poteets Big engine failed etc. Then you get EJ Kowalski and crew that set multiple records with two cars, one vintage oval track and one rear engine like we are discussing here.

Somebody whose been to Bonneville countless years please tell me if Shug Hanchard and his wife don’t have fun. They have a room full of Record trophies and walls full of Bonneville record Certifications. They have built roadsters of all kinds to run in open classes and get records every year many years more than one.
There are procrastinators for years building cars to beat them but just can’t come up with the $$$ to make some perfect creation while the Hanchards use rattle cans for paint if it’s painted at all. They meet safety standards and have a great time. I root for the “So What Speed Shop” every year.
