Hi! I just bought my first Ford flathead V8 (a 24 stud pulled from a 39 merc) I have tried to identify the year it’s from and if it have som kind of block name. As I understand I can only know if its a 221 or 239 from measurement of the stroke? But can you tell anything from these casting markings or can I find any other somewhere? The casting on top of the bellhousing is very hard to see what it is. I can only see an ”H”. Can you tell anything from the numbers on the heads? Thank you! Skickat från min iPhone med H.A.M.B.
Post pics of the whole engine....we can at least narrow it down. The markings are pretty meaningless.
The difference between a 221 ci and a 239 ci is in the bore, not the stroke. A 221 will have a 3 1/16" bore, while a 239 will have a 3 3/16" bore. One good thing; if you pull a head, it's easier to measure the bore rather than the stroke. (Both have a 3 3/4" stroke.)
Thank you for the clarification. I have found multiple sources that says different things, bore or stroke.
Just to keep things straight. Flathead Ford V8 engines (excluding the V8-60 and Lincolns) came in three displacements : 221 ci ('32-'42 Fords) - 3 1/16" bore X 3 3/4" stroke 239 ci ('46-'53 Fords, '39-'48 Mercurys). - 3 3/16" bore X 3 3/4" stroke 255 ci ('49-'53 Mercurys) - 3 3/16" bore X 4" stroke There may some rare exceptions (special orders and police cars as well as some trucks).
If it,s out of a Mercury would,nt it be a 99 type engine ? See if there is a 99 forged here at the top of the yellow arrow.
Not likely it's a 99 block, but probably a regular 39-41 block. Check the sides of the block down low where the pan bolts up to see if it has bulges. Those are the freeze plugs in the pan gasket surface.
Vanpelt Sales has a lot of good information on flatheads including identification @ www.vanpeltsales.com .
6049 is the part number for one head, 6050 for the other side head. i for get which side is which, but then later the 59ab head could be used on either side
