Oh man what a drag. The only thing that’s not on is the correct alternator but all of the ones I’d like to run are smaller than the mock up one so hopefully I’m in the clear

Got everything trimmed back to fit the collector last night. Getting tacked up tonight.

thing looks so puny sitting on the work bench. Think I forget how tiny these cars are some times.

Wow that things tiny! My buddy dan is running a denzo style one that I swear is the size of a big orange. Smaller than my first by quite a bit.

he thinks it came from a fork lift as well! Found it at the swap meet already chromed!

The 1980 Toyota Corolla alternator is pretty small.

He’s making a joke that a Toyota alternator is off topic and he’s reporting it

OK. Guys at the HAMB drags can run just about any transmission or rear end they can stuff under their car or a generator from a Japanese tractor is OK but an alternator from an Japanese car isn't. That really is a joke but I'm not sure I get it. Especially when so many of the parts we use now are made in China.:D

Yeah sorry for being so touchy. It's hard to tell what is said in jest here sometimes. I've put a lot of time in finding real parts for my roadster, and wasted more time in not getting it built. :)

That's sometimes a little more difficult than you think but it's nice to see a genuine Traditional build...there's not to much off-shore stuff on my Ole Jalopy and I'm good with it but when push comes to shove I'm okay with repro vintage as long as the quality is respected...

What are you gonna use for a valve cover gasket for that converted Frontenac?

@Austin kays im thinking I’ll buy the thickest roll of gasket cork I can find

second idea is maybe a sheet of soft rubber and a razor knife?

@Six Ball i did look it up and seems it’s a nipson denzo or how ever you spell it like the one I’ve been considering. Though I can’t find a specific model number yet so I can’t search and see if the outside dimensions are smaller than the one I found.

I feel like I’ve seen at least two if not three different sizes of them

Buddy sent me a photo of his tiny alternator I was talking about. A quick google says it’s a 35 amp unit . 9AF95E3D-4FFA-4719-80B5-3D2A4A9BA192.jpeg

I think I have one of the Toyota ones around here. I'll take a look. We had it on my son's Stude.

I believe the 87 Toyota is the same as the Suzuki unit. Set for a single v belt and 55 amps

A 35 amp might be the ticket, maybe it won't roast old gauges.

I have a Suzuki one sitting on the shop floor in a box. Worked fined, I upgraded.

I'll donate it to the project if you want @Tim .

hadn’t even thought of that aspect! I’ve got all new gauges but it’s something to consider in the future for sure

We use those guys all the time for industrial gaskets of all sorts, I never thought of them for automotive stuff . Duh.

Left town for a couple days with the family. Found that renting a cabin about as far as away from another human as we can get is pretty relaxing for my brain.

during a hike we noticed something F75CB0C0-9A8F-4781-B5C5-EC6F0BD3AEC5.jpeg is that.... D922238B-F2F2-410C-9033-472D8FBCC3D7.jpeg sure is!

I was texting the owner of the property about something else and mentioned that the grill shell on the fence under the vines was nicer than the one on my car and they said take it! 8E1BDEF6-65C1-4FD1-8D56-8F15A9F64640.jpeg so the next morning the kiddo and I went out and found it again and liberated it. It seems way more solid than my current one but a little more twisted and dinged up. I’m thinking I’d rather bang out dents in good metal than fill an acre of pits in thin metal.

We’ll see 6D9BB4FF-A60E-40E8-B59F-CC167D66302A.jpeg im planing on taking the old grill, some roached head light buckets on a dropped headlight bar and an old license plate back with us the next time we visit and putting them on the fence where this was. Figure it’ll make the next hot rod guy hiking past smile. 0FA7BAA4-307F-4DD6-B9CB-AFB2BB0B249E.jpeg thats it for this update :)

38D03928-1C83-4B12-8890-E959026016A6.jpeg Draining the garden hose to put it away for the winter and thought I’d hose this off quick 4EB3B12A-91D1-4DFB-81EB-FF2ED95C28CB.jpeg A9E1823A-12D3-4BDC-8882-09D2724BA28A.jpeg not bad! Few dings and its twisted a little. But after laying it flat on the driveway it’s twisted less than I thought. F384ACF8-6659-4844-998B-D0CA7EFA285A.jpeg main damage is here. The peak is all booggerd up and the front passenger side of the... face? To the passenger side of where the badge goes.

    it’s kinda bellied out.

I’m thinking my subtle twist/ tweak in the sides is actually radiating from this mess here so I’ll fix this first and see what relaxes out before going further with it.

im half tempted to just cut it out and weld the straight/ crisp section from the old one but I figure by the time you cut, weld, grind, finish and then body work that pitted mess that it’s probably less work to just hammer this out.

still might swap radiator cap holes but we’ll see.

just hosing it off for now. When I find a tub to soak my wheels in acid I’ll dunk this too and see what we got.

A little hammer and dolly and it should be fine.
