Interesting setup there. Can you explain the materials used and how/where you are pulling the vacuum from on the head? What is that plate where the schrader valve is located? Where does that pull from on the head? What type material is the head laying on? Enquiring minds want to know!

And how did you get that T-5 case looking that good?

  7. The head is sitting on a dence foam pad and the vacuum pump uses the same foam and we oil thenm lightly the vacuum pump pulls a vacume of 30 lbs.
Then the pump is shut off and the valve to the right is closed and then you wait and see if it looses the 30 lbs of vacume. If not there are no leeks if it looses the vac then we start the magna Flux process...
The tranny cases are degreesed and then glass beaded then pressure washed in a hot tank. Then blow dried and inspected.
    Hope this helps ..John

If you were reading the blue (low side gauge) it appears as if you have 25" of vacuum. If that is all the pump would pull, and after you shut it off and let it sit for a period of time with no movement, I would think you would be golden. This is how we used to test refrigeration and air conditioning systems for refrigerant leaks. But maybe you already knew that!?

A perfect vacuum in "hg" terms, (atmospheric pressure) is 29 and change. Most common vacuum pumps find it difficult to reach this. I used to do a lot of cryogenics (think -100 degrees F and below) for medical refrigerators/freezers and we had a special vacuum pump we used to achieve deep vacuums like that.

I've pressure checked with water on cold parts for long term coolant loss with nothing visible. When the parts were at operating temperature the cracks/pinholes had opened up allowing coolant to go out with the exhaust. After multiple inspections - with engines in service between inspections - the cracks/pinholes eventually got big enough to get spotted with ~a 20# pressure water test. Rare, but it has happened.

  13. I don't normally do the pressure test at Jimmys Engine Service but he was busy and I figured I would give it a try.
I read the Right side Guage (wrong) the left will go all the way to the end of the red with max Vac. It lost 30 persent from looking at the left gage. According to Jimmy it should not have lost anything.
So Monday we do it again .

The very outside numbers on the blue gauge represent PSI of positive pressure above "0" (zero).. Below the "0" (zero) mark represents inches of vacuum. Yes, if the needle on the gauge moved from the red numbers on the outside scale towards the "0", then there is a leak somewhere. It could be anywhere though, the pad it is sitting on or how the schrader valve is sealed against the head. Good luck!

  18. New centered pinion rear housing and axels purchased.
The Ford factory offset the engine and rear end to accommodate clearances. I placed our engine centered in the frame therfore the driveshaft was not inline as it should be. But now it will be and should solve the problems we were having with tailshaft bushing failure

  25. 6000 RPM with no oil pressure is not good for bearings. Time for an up grade.
Really need to sell some Tee Shirts for sure now..

John, this is the reason Bonneville, which appears to be easy, is not. I’m not going to say luck has anything to do with it but the salt gods or gremlins demand their due it seems.
You and your guys do not appear to want to throw in the towel and I applaud you. For me I’ve felt we all make our choices of what we want to run up there and are very stubborn at times. I for one did not see you having an engine problem and I’m sure you will find what it is. Holding your foot in anything for 3-5 miles takes not only guts but confidence in what you have built.
You will figure it out and be back as you do have the bug...J D
