    They did get low. Knew a couple of pilots .They had stories. Some can't be told.

    The Douglas A-1 Sky Raider is one tough, extremely well built, kick ass machine, that was the only piston powered aircraft that actually shot down a Mig in the Viet Nam war. They were also known as " Sandy " . It could take a lot of punishment and still get back home. Great extended loiter time as well. They were indeed very " BAD NEWS " if you were the enemy!

    The AD1 could also carry as much ordinance externally as the B17 could carry internally."Bad News" indeed.

    Wow !
    That video really brings back memories from my early childhood. As a kid, we lived out in the country next to a peach orchard out in back of the house. One day when my parents were both out of the house on a Saturday, " BETTENCOURT SPRAYING SERVICE " ( that was what was written on the side of the Stearman crop duster, same type as seen in this video ) was spraying the peaches. This was back in 1960 when I was 7 years old. I heard the Pratt and Whitney R-985, with its roar and the snarl of the prop as it took a bite out of the air, I quickly ran outside and climbed the ladder we had along side of the house to get up on the roof to get a better view.

    I was amazed at the skill of the pilot as he would make a pass and then climb steeply and kick the rudder to bring her back around for another pass. I was going nuts on top of the house waving my arms wildly to get the pilots attention. It worked. When he made his last spray pass, he flew over our house in a classic buzz, which really was amazing, but to make it even better for me as a kid, that was having a great experience, the pilot pulled up steeply and really kicked the Stearman's rudder, hard in the ass and made a low pass right over our house, and this time he was low enough I could see his face and his smile and his goggles as I was waving to him and he waved back at me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Then he flew off because he was finished with the spray job. That very experience was the hook, that sank deep into me, into the realm of aviation! That pilot knew just how cool it was, to do what he did, and back then nobody would have ratted him out for that low buzz, because we were that far out in the country, no cell phones!

    The world of AG piloting has changed dramatically over the decades, but as the video so aptly displays, its a special type of flying that really is precise and for the pilot, a hell of a challenge to stay out of the trees and avoid the wires. Thanks for posting this great video, its really cool!

    This is a line drawing I did years ago of a Air Tractor with a P&W R-985 in it, now a days, most of the Air Tractors have P&W PT-6 turbines in them.

    Air Tractors have evolved into the realm of fire fighting as well, such as this one that is known as the (FIRE BOSS) that can skim the water, filling up the tank and getting right back to the fire quickly, with out having to go back to a land based operation, these also have Amphibious floats so that that they can operate from land based operations as well.

    41 GMC, odd thing about that video. That KID, was John Walton, Sam Walton's boy.:D Wal-mart Sam Walton! John lost his life later in an ultra-light crash. Lippy

    While station in Korea, talk to some ROK F-16 drivers, most refer to the F-4 as the "John Wayne" aircraft.

    Not to bad mouth the old Skyraider, but when I was crewchief on one back in 1969 they had a huge stainless steel strap bolted to the bottom of the main center spar. I believe a crew was killed in training, they completed a strafe run, pulled back on the stick and the wings folded up over the fuselage! The Raiders were equipped with ground zero ejection seats. But with the wings blocking the canopy, they were stuck! I also remember installing metal slides on the windshield frame and top center support on the E model! They were there to help guide your shoulder out when ejecting and save your knee caps on the windshield frame! But they were still a blast to work on!

    "It takes leather balls to play rugby " and it requires amazing skills to be a helicopter pilot. A million parts all holding hands at various RPM's and torque %'s, truly amazing. This is my offering to those that love old tractors and helicopters, this was one of my best selling T-Shirt designs, at Oshkosh.

    When I realized what the prop has to do to keep a helicopter in the air I knew I would never ride in one. Too many moving parts.

    I'm still very new here. My name is Alex.

    I have a FAA A&P licence too.
    In 1979 I worked on a 1943 Japanese A6M3 Zero. This is the Imperial Navy model with folding wingtips for carrier duty. The project involved recovering the skins on the aircraft's empennage. Its was 1979, and almost no one was interested in 'preserving' much of anything, so the old skins were tossed out. A few of us grabbed them, and I got the only one with the Mitsubishi factory markings still intact.

    Here is a photo of it. If you google this Zero serial number, you'll come to a site called PacificWrecks. There is a page on that site with a small write-up about this Zero. A nice bit of published provenance for this piece.

    This is a World War Two, B-17, radio destruct switch box. These are all "new old stock" in the original never opened factory box. The text printed on the switch box reads: "DANGER To destroy special radio press both buttons simultaneously". The box is bright red in color. There is a cable entry and exit hole on the sides.
