Your assumption is correct. Different, way different. L6 is really odd, or seems so to me. Even hard to bolt to a stand.
On that flathead 6, the flywheel does not clear the bellhousing. I learned that on my '51 Plymouth. When I replaced the engine in my '39 Fargo, I thought it would be smart to pull the engine with the bellhousing attached. Found out that wasn't too smart either; the brake and clutch pedals are attached to the bellhousing. Slant sixes are way easy.
It's a similar design to most early engines...the Chevy 235, Caddy 346, etc are the same way. It was difficult to cast a block with a flange on the back, so the bellhousing had to go between the block and flywheel.
Not sure.....there was the Dodge truck change over bell housing .from flat to slant. You do know the flathead 6 had a bellhousing that bolted up to the early hemi didn't you ?
I think there was a truck bell that did fit several engines...a bit heavy one, and the flywheel was pretty deep at the center...but it's been several years since I've worked on one.
I can definitely see the Flat 6 pattern in it. Bet that would be a tough find tho. For what I need finding a slant 6 bell would probably be easier, then get creative and adapt my tranny to it
Yep. I have one from a59 or 60 truck. Hyd clutch setup, mounts for my 56 (with a crossmember change)and fits early hemi and poly motors Yeah, not easy to find
Dodge did build a 413 in 1954 https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=Dcvb9tEQ&id=6A8DB338F09786D043217B5290C693AA8272842C&thid=OIP.Dcvb9tEQ66GfI_BnsH9Q5gHaE_&mediaurl=https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/37/20/fc/3720fc6c79523e47b22f91a75927b06c.jpg&exph=352&expw=523&q=dodge+six+cylinder+413&simid=608045560108223288&ck=7F636B40ADC9CA2C150B870ABF8049FE&selectedindex=1&form=IRPRST&idpp=overlayview&ajaxhist=0&vt=0&sim=11
