Some good pics by Moriarty (and others). This pic shows a 62 Vette with a 1965 Michigan plate. Ran in D/V which was possibly Detroit Dragway and AHRA. Not sure when they switched from NHRA to AHRA but we ran in F/V in 68 with a 283/270 1961 Corvette. He would have run in E/V probably in 68 and so D/V with the 327 was probably correct for 65. Hubba, hubba he got the big T on the windshield as class winner (trophy winner) and got to run in eliminations. In 68 I seem to remember street eliminator and super street eliminator. Good times.

  12. ZOINKS!

I wonder if he said something just before he staged, like... 'I tweaked the carbs... this baby should really fly now!'

BTW, the video comments said he sustained minor injuries which was better than what I envisioned based on the footage.

Oh wow! Considering corvettes were semi designed for high speeds I’m surprised to see it fly around like that.

    That was ugly!
I don't think the sliderule engineers of the late 50's/early 60's had predicted those kind of speeds (and et's) yet.

So Mark, with all this free time you have now, are you going to take some cooking classes?:D
Sure would like to see that beauty of a Corvette in some different settings too!

The new for 1963 Corvette was wind tunnel tested during it's design faze. They knew it started to lift and leave the ground at 120 mph. It's in the SAE report.

If you lower the hood down but do not latch it on a midyear Corvette and run the car up to about 90 mph the rear of the hood being hinged at the front will begin to rise. Playing with the gas (speed) you can raise and lower the hood An example of the lift that is present over the front of the car at speed. Zora spoke of the problem occasionally.

There was no excuse for that crash. Every one knew by 1966 that the C2 front end was bad. I bet the owner of that car regrets saving a few pounds not installing an air dam. Zora described the C2 front as a badly designed airplane wing.
C1 and C2 vettes Both had bad lifts at the front ends. The C2 was a little worse. The rear end lifts were equally as bad. I have driven my red car up to 165 mph and had to lift because the rear end was so light it was driving like on snow at that speed. I researched it and found that an 18" wing with a1/4" wicker would fix that problem. Not doing that to my car.

Man, that drivers reactions were pretty slow, once the front started to lift he should have lifted. I have broke on the starting line lots and have lifted in 1000s of a second as to not over rev the engine. Jim

That’s one horrible video! I wholeheartedly agree , get off the gas QUICK! I can attest to “stupid” mid years lifting at speed, mine gets “power steering“somewhere between 130 and 140. The ass end lift in hard corners also requires a 911 style response. Still I wouldn’t trade the feel of her for much else!! C3B995E7-FA11-4C3E-A6CB-7CC086A23DB2.jpeg

  23. Nice midyear. The “stupid” was an inside joke From a PM i had just sent.

That is Shannons corvette i think, extremely fast car, those are heads up 1/8 mile racing cars, guessing going into the 4s, things happen fast on the big end and when you realize sometning is up and lift you are already to late to stop, dont judge to harshly and remember this is heads up racing and not bracket, first to the line wins.
    Thanks,
    jp

Hey, JP, I get it, but that lift was probably known as to what may happen. I think he road it out for the glory and lost it. I would have done the same. But I am known as " the one who will never lift"
