Technical Is this a valve spring compressor.. for.. ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustynewyorker, Oct 5, 2020.

  1. Found this at the flea market the other day.

Reminds me of a flathead valve spring compressor but it's much smaller and more delicate. I didn't have a ruler handy for the pics but the last one is shown next to what I think is an actual flathead spring compressor for the size comparison. I want to say the jaw width is around 3/4" to 1".

So I'm wondering just what it's for -

Small engine tool. Flathead Briggs&Stratton, etc.

  4. That was what I was thinking too, something small that probably no one bothers to repair anymore.

You'd be surprised how many of those older engines get rebuilt, especially the K series Kohlers. they were used by Case, JD and other makers that have a collector and user following.

Looks like it's the size for working on engines where you can compress the springs by hand, no tool needed :)

How wide are the forks that fit on the spring? that is, what spring outside diameter is it designed to work with?

  7. Like I said I didn't have anything handy to measure or I'd have laid it out in the picture but looks like around one inch.

  9. Could be for motorcycles too.... Japanese multis have small valve springs.

I haven't been keeping change in my pocket lately, either.

A penny is 3/4" diameter, a quarter is just under an inch (really close to 15/16")
